Seeking Candidates for Vacant ANC 5B Seat
Do you live in ANC 5B05? If so, that seat is vacant, and we're looking for candidates to fill it. You can pick up a petition at:
D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics
441 - 4th Street, NW, Room 250N
Washington, DC 20001
Interested candidates will need to get at least 25 signatures from registered voters within their Single Member District (it's a good idea to get extras just in case). Here's the circulation period for petitions (i.e. your signatures are due February 6th):
Petition Circulation Period: Tuesday, January 17, 2012 thru Monday, February 6, 2012
Petition Challenge Period: Thursday, February 9, 2012 thru Wed., February 15, 2012
You can call 727-2525 with any questions about qualifications, or procedures. The actual election date has not been set in stone yet, but it's coming up soon.

That phantom Moby Dick House of Kabob that appears on Google maps taunts me every time I see it. I would love to have one of those in the hood.
Also, can Tina Laskaris just be the ANC commissioner for all of Trinidad? She wouldn't mind right?

I'd alsoo encourage folks to check out the new smd boundaries as well-which seem to include significant changes in the neighborhood. You don't want to be redistriected out of a position in a few months!
When do the new boundaries kick in? July 1st?

Tom,
These are the new boundaries. They will apply in time for the April 12th primaries.

There are no primaries for ANC elections. The November election will be the first where people vote using the new boundaries, and the new boundaries themselves are effective January 2013.
The new Ward boundaries, on the other hand, were implemented January 1, 2012 (which means, for example, that ANC 6C now spans Wards 2 & 6).

4:40,
I know that there are no primaries for ANC elections. I just meant that these are the new boundaries for this ANC 5B05. ANC 5B05 is a special election. I don't have handy a map of the old SMD boundaries.

link to the current 5B SMDs
There are a lot of 4 unit buildings there, so a dense population compared to parts of the neighborhood with SFHs.
The proposed redistricting gives Trinidad 3 SMDs rather than the current 4. The new boundaries kick in Jan 1 2013 although elections for those positions are in November.

DJBays,
That's the one I was using. I guess it's the old one. I just thought it was the new one.

ANC5B's boundaries are unchanged - they have been the same since Jan 1, 2003.
The ANC includes that triangle of Ivy City south of Mt. Olivet, west of West Virginia, as well as a few blocks of Ivy City north of Mt. Olivet and the youth jail. That alone makes up approximately 250 of the 2000 people in the SMD.
here's a preliminary look at the new SMD boundaries. They are still subject to change, as the council has not given a final vote yet.

Re: Moby Dick,
A kabob spot opened up at 25th and Benning a couple months ago. Stumbled upon it Saturday.
It was pretty good. Maybe not quite as awesome as Kabob Palace, but it gets the job done

Great photo!

Dave B (and others): I've also been to the kabob place at 25th and Benning (near the new 7-11), and I agree that it was really pretty good! No Kabob Palace, but still offers something not currently offered on H Street.
