Reader Question: Local CSA?

A reader writes in with a question about local farm shares. I have not subscribed to a CSA, but I know that many people around here do subscribe. Any advice?

My husband and I live at 6th & L NE, and we're interested in trying out a farm share this year. I've gotten lots of good recs from friends who live in other parts of the city, but their shares don't deliver anywhere near H St (the closest is Eastern Market, which isn't really that close).

Would you mind doing a blog post about CSAs/farm shares that deliver in our neighborhood? I think it would be of interest to a lot of folks.

Lancaster Farms CSA delivers to the church at 9th and MD NE. I've subscribed for 2 years and renewed again for this year.

My wife & I live at 17th & Lyman NE, and Washington Green Grocers delivers to our doorstep. Technically they're not a CSA; they source from a number of local farms. We've been happy with it.

I Highly recommend Karl's Farm. They deliver to your house throughout DC. Karl and Paula are wonderful to deal with. http://www.karls-farm.com/

I'd also recommend you look in to some of the "meta" CSAs that now serve the area, and link your family with multiple local farmers. I've used Arganica in the past, and they just massively improved their ordering system, and looked at South Mountain Creamery pretty intensely for a while.

Also, note that many of the Saturday vendors at Eastern Market are not local, and most of the rest are resellers for part or all of their stock, not farmers themselves - it is not a FreshFarm market.

as others have said, while not a CSA, Washington Green Grocer tries to source local produce, and also has local milk, eggs, meat and a whole list of other items available for delivery to your doorstep. Plus, you can substitute items that you know you won't eat, which has been very helpful for our family!
