Recent Car Break-Ins

A reader writes in relating her experience with the rash of recent car beak-in in the area:

I live at 6th and F, NE and there has been a string of car break-ins. My car was broken into between Tuesday and Wednesday while it was parked in my driveway in a very well-lit alley. As a result, the police placed pink flyers on the cars surrounding the neighborhood with generic tips to prevent break-ins. However, there was nothing visible in my car and they still broke in (and took a bat to the body of the car as well as the windows).

If you want, please give readers the heads-up to be extra vigilant and on the look out for who is responsible - and to be extra careful in their alleys.

Same story here a few days before, we're at 6th between L and M.

As an officer in the area I can tell you that we are aware of the recent spike in theft from autos.
I know the flyers seem generic but the intent is to drive the community's attention around the problem
Our biggest resource in solving this problem and catching the offenders is an active and aware community. I always like to remind people that you do not need to see a crime being committed to call the police. If something doesn't feel right or there is suspicious activity going on, call 911. Give us a description of what's going on and who's involved. This type of involvement is key in curbing the crime and getting the criminals behind bars.
Also, our community meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month at Sherwood Rec. The meetings are a great forum to bring up these issues.

From the description, this doesn't sound like "break-ins" so much as vandalism -- smashing stuff just to smash stuff.

La tee da. Aren't you fancy with a drive way....

Our next door neighbor at 4th and G st. NE had her car broken into two weeks ago. Smashed the window and took a few things.

There's also been a rash of package thefts in the neighborhood. We had a packaged delivered by USPS and placed in our recycling bin to keep it out of sight and someone stole it.

Amateur hour continues. Senate Square has a cadre of drivers who are notorious for leaving their navigation system mounts and iPod cradles clearly visible. This ain't Clarendon!

That's why I don't have a car. I don't have to worry about this.

I live at 13th and H NE and in the past few months have had a tire slashed and a brick thrown through one of my windows--nothing taken. Seems like pure vandalism.

it will get even worse when the street car starts bringing in the thugs from Ward 7

Trolling already 4:03?

sorry, but that post is not really worthy. There have been like 5 car break ins around 13th and D in the last couple of months. Its like it happens almost once a week. Its the cost of living in the city you have always be viligent be even then at some point your car will side swipped or broken into. "its not Clarendon"....

The post had an article about car break ins on the hill a few weeks ago if anyone wants to read about it.

Of course your car got broken into. You parked it at 13th and H. Anything past 7th is a No-go. Have you seen 8th and H? And the undesirable element there waiting for the bus?

'undesirable element waiting for the bus' ... and to break in to your car??? why are these thoughts one and the same? why is it undesirable to have black people waiting for the bus. i'm so over this.

and why make assumptions about WHO and what type of people are doing these things? you never know what few pints at the biergarten haus or some cans of natty bohs with your pie might make one do.

Gross white people wait for the bus there too....

Guys,
7:44 is pretty clearly trolling. Don't feed into it.

I live on 8th and H and I don't have a problem with people waiting for the bus. I do have a problem with the people that just hang out there doing nothing but littering, leaving behind all the cheap alcohol bottles, the Mc.Donalds bags, the chicken wing bones, the ones that scream at and hit their 2 year old babies like if they were adults, the ones that pee on sidewalk, to me, that is an undesirable element (by "that", I the attitudes and the lack of a more civic behavior). I love the neighborhood, but when I decide to take the bus instead of the metro, and have to walk past the bus stop on H, it is just so sad. There are several other bus stops along 8th street that cover the same route and none of them look like the one on H.

Shiiiiiit.

I always assumed those people were all waiting to get into Toki?

Noticed a lot of cars with windows taped over with cardboard/plastic on 7th Street, between K and Florida. There may be more, but that is just the route I walk often.

Remember to keep valuables out of sight, or ideally, don't leave them in your car at all.

This isn't as simple as "don't leave things out in your car." I had my car broken into yesterday at 14th and D NE, and nothing, aside from maybe an umbrella was visible, not even 25 cents. My large passenger window was smashed and then glove compartment and center console rifled through, what a surprise that the thief found nothing worth in the trash pile of receipts and that ended up stowed there... Now I have removed everything possible from the car and will be leaving the console and glove compartment open for all to see in hopes that it will not happen again.

The same thing happened to my girlfriend in late December on 14th PL in between F and G. No valuables to speak of, but busted out the smaller rear passenger window (not the main one) and rifled through her car. On that particular night they hit at least three cars on the block in a similar manner. T

I live at 6th and H also and had my window smashed last Tuesday. There was nothing in sight and nothing was taken. My glove box and center console was rooted through, but again, nothing to take. Very frustrating! The street is well lit and there are always people about. I don't understand how people are getting away with this so easily

11:21 here

You are all right, that is not a cure-all, nor was it meant to be. Unfortunately, nothing is for stupid random acts. This is a suggestion to mitigate risk. But sometimes, you can do everything right and still get the short end of it.

If it still happens, at least you're only out cash for a new window rather than your GPS or whatever.
