I looked out just in time to see 4 young men in ski masks walk by a group of other people, cross 16th street and into my next door neighbor's back yard. My dog was in my back yard and when I went to let her in I saw the guys hiding in my neighbors yard. The coos were here in under 2 minutes, but by then the group of people who witnessed it had disbursed and the criminals were gone.

"Shortly after 11pm, an unknown suspect fired shots at an individual who was in the parking lot of the apartment complex in the 1500 block of Benning Rd NE. The victim was struck in the buttocks/lower leg area" - MPDC

MPD officials are denying that the recent spike in crime the area is seeing is happening. This produced a lot of anger at the meeting with MPD officials at Ludlow-Taylor last week.

I missed the "crime meeting" last week that Chris mentions above... Can anyone provide a quick summary of what was discussed (or even just what MPD's explanation was for all the non-crime)?

A lot of people miss meetings and I think it is why MPD doesn't take us seriously. If you show up in force and be loud about what is going on at these meetings, MPD will respond.

9 bullets at close range and only some slight wounds?

Clearly this was gang initiation of some sort. The shooters were all teenagers- or maybe early 20s.

there were also at least 4 other men standing in the parking lot at the time who must have seen the whole thing. But of course they scattered like roaches.

It's clearly not an election year for Tommy Wells. The meeting was at 6PM, and yet there were quite a few people there, and they did not respond well to the spoon fed crap. Tommy didn't even bother to get the 5th District commander there.

Tommy Wells didn't get the 5D commander there because Tommy Wells didn't organize the meeting. Citizens from ANC-6A and ANC-6C organized the meeting and requested that he come, and make sure MPD came too.

The meeting was by design intended to specifically focus on a recent spike in crime in the area roughly bounded by Florida/Benning, 17th, North Carolina, Mass, and 4th Streets -- none of which is in 5D -- and more specifically, a string of incidents near Ludlow-Taylor, and in the 400 blocks of 12th and 13th Streets, also not in 5D.

Always sad to see violence, but let's not forget that last year we had a 40 plus year low in homicides and this year is trending significantly lower. The overall trend is extremely good.

As someone who always misses meetings, it's because 1. I usually only hear about them the day of, or after the fact, and 2. even though my house is here, I don't work in the city and can't attend weeknight meetings unless they start very late (which they never do).

I'd have to really plan ahead, like a couple of days ahead, to make one of these meetings, and I usually don't have that kind of time to take off of work. I know not everyone is in the same position I am, but I'm sure many others have their own good reasons for not coming to meetings. Don't assume that because we don't attend, we aren't interested.

To hear about stuff like that meeting, the best sources of information are your ANC's mailing list, and the mailing list for whatever MPD district you're in. I caught the news about it on the ANC-6A and MPD-1D mailing lists.

The crime meeting was advertised as being hosted by Tommy Wells and the First District Commander.

The shooting at 9:30 in the morning at 15th & C NE was in the 5th District...of course it was across the street from the 1st District. You are being foolish if you let artificial boundaries excuse the lack of police accountability. The boundaries mean nothing to the knuckle heads.

"There were 875 robberies reported in the District through March 18. Driving the increase has been a jump in incidents in which a gun was used; those crimes are up more than 70 percent."

That is not what I assume. I know better. Its what the politicians tend to think. If it is bad enough, there will be more outrage. If there is little participation, they are concerned very little. If you have to miss the meeting, maybe you can email TW and the Commander and express your frustration eventhough you could not attend the meeting.

Keep in mind that the reduction in homicides comes from many factors-- improved healthcare/emergency medical care, nationwide crime trends, etc-- not just the work of MPD.

Better stats to use for trending/metrics: Assault w/ Dangerous Weapon (includes shootings) combined with homicide number, robberies, etc.

Another stat would be the number of homicide cases closed in a particular year. As the WaPo recently showed, MPD closed less than 50% of homicides committed last year within the same year.

I would much rather have a drop in homicides than robberies. Additionally, I would posit that that a lot of those robberies are committed by a small group of folks. Once the police get 'em it should cool down considerably.

Huh. When did 5D pick up Rosedale/Kingman Park?

The overall map of the districts still shows Rosedale as being in 1D, although the maps of the individual districts have been updated since whenever this occurred.

7:46,
That's based on the old map. They new one puts Rosedale in 5D.
