Go Vote!

Polls are open until 8pm. Turnout is expected to be very light (likely under 10%), so your vote really can matter today.

Is there a reason to vote if you don't live in Wards 2, 4, 7 or 8?

The Orange/Shapiro/Biddle race for the at large seat is wide open. I'd call that a good reason for anyone in this city to go out and vote.

@Part of the 90%

If you are an independent (like I am), no, you can't even go if you wanted to. These closed primaries in DC are ridiculous. I HAVE to join a party just to vote in a primary. For a city that wants enfranchisement in Congress, I think this is very regressive and should be changed.

I too shake my fist fecklessly at the injustice of it all. No, actually I just registered as a Democrat, and I vote in local elections. I see no need to give myself a big pat on the back for my "independent" status.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Want to have a voice in local politics? Register as a Democrat. If your friends from back home stop talking to you, they were never your friends to begin with.

Not to mention that plenty of other states follow the same process. You can still vote independent in the general election.

Vincent Orange is up for re-election which is an important seat on the council. That's worth voting for. Eleanor Holmes Norton was running unopposed and frankly, the shadow senator seat and the shadow representative seats are kind of useless.

The presidential primary is happening as well today if you care one way or the other.

FYI - the breakdown is roughly half and half:

I am with Anon@10:30 though. It is absolutely BS that I have to register with the ruling party in order to have a meaningful vote. In a city that is disenfranchised, you would think an effort would be made to enfranchise our own voters. Especially when the first argument made regarding a national vote is always that we are overwhelmingly Democrat.

Thanks "progressives "for 4 more years of Orange.

I'm sorry am I missing something here? I didnt see anyone for ward 5. I thought ward 5 was selecting a person to replace Thomas? Or is that a special election in April?

I had kind of checked out of this election cycle.

I wonder if you hear this kind of griping and moaning in rural Oklahoma from Democrats? Somehow I doubt it.

After all you if you live in some backwards-ass conservative hell-hole, you "have to register with the ruling party in order to have a meaningful vote." And that party is the GOP.

Stop whining. At least there are significant differences in candidates at the primary level.
