H Street, Graphically

HstNE

Reader Renee Thompson sent in this H Street graphic that she created in GIS. Anyone else out their creating fun neighborhood art like this? If so, send it my way and I'll post it. Be sure to let me know if you don't want me to mention your name.

Well, it's part of H Street, at least.

am i missing something? it looks like a red and white map. I never was good at deciphering art...

also, anyone know what was going on at Jimmy's Tires building on Florida this afternoon? it looked like workers were there this evening.

7:31,
It's an H Street graphic that a reader sent to me as "neighborhood 'art'" because she was having fun. I'm interested in H Street graphics/icons/pics/art/ect.

I saw the guys at Jimmy's Tire too. Not sure what they are doing.

This is not art. This is a map that someone who does real work made and someone who considers themselves an artist turned red.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but how is this art?

Guys,
Perhaps our energies might be better focused producing some neighborhood art, rather than just criticizing someone else's image.

I agree, I am not an artist, just a GIS analyst. I had been seeing a lot of "art" like this lately, companies will let you pay them to make this "art" for you. http://cityprintsmapart.com/university-of-maryland
I thought it would be fun to use my "skills" (it took 5 minutes:) to do one of MY neighborhood, where I live...sorry eastenders. I agree with inked though, I would love to see more neighborhood inspired artistic creations.

oops I meant sorry westenders...hee hee you think I geographer would be better with direction;) I originally came from the west coast so everything is east from there.

I can see the art in it - it appears to have been manually rendered (the East-West streets show slight shifts/jogs from the computer program). If you can't say anything nice, no matter what your aesthetic taste, maybe it's worth just staying a teensy bit quiet and letting people enjoy their creativity, no matter what your hyper-judgmental self thinks of it. At least two people liked it, the artist herself and the owner of the blog that you chose to read. Ease off a bit!

Does the "artist" wait tables or tend bar for now to make money until someone starts buying their totally ill wares? That person is going to be slinging drinks a lot longer than they thought..... Now bring me another beer.

Anon 7:44: Are you pointing out the flaws in this oeuvre? Because it made me realize I'm not an artist, but at least I can draw a straight line.

Be nice.

I like it. Shit, I'd buy it if it was cheap and at some market...especially since my place is on it.

Have you seen some of what passes for art? This blows a lot of it out of the water. No need to argue over the label "art" or not. It's cool. I say so.

INKED - Let's have a Frozen Tropics Art Contest! We can submit proposals to you (TIFF or JPG) and the critics (readers of your blog) can be the judge. What say you?

Most negative blog community I've ever come across.

7:45,
Hmm. Maybe a contest. For now, I'd just like to see what kinds of stuff people are producing. Hopefully people will be a little less mean than some people have been in this thread.

I don't know whether it's the mentality of DC or just these consumerist times, but it's a shame that some of you can only view art on whether it is marketable or whether someone would buy it. Sometimes art is just one person experimenting with their own creativity, and one of the beauties of the internet (in general) and this blog (in particular) is that it gives you a venue to share what you've done. Neither the artist nor Inked asked if you would buy it, nor do they likely care. Beauty (and art) is in the eye of the beholder, and all of you armchair quarterbacks who have nothing better to do than run everybody down because they don't meet your aesthetic expectations, or opening hours, or whatever else you choose to complain about are not contributing positively to the discussion or this blog. It's a lot easier to comment on others than to actually DO something.

Someone experimenting with their own creativity is not art.....much like this map.

Someone stringing together a series of words does not make it a valid nor worthwhile opinion...much like the previous comment.

i like it. i'd frame it and hang it on my wall. it's graphic, it pops and it represents something that not everyone who walks through my door would get. art simply neeeds to elicit a response, as this art clearly has. perhaps those critical of this rendering of our neighborhood best stick to what is considered traditional art. like
pics of seashores and fruit. i agree this blog does have some naturally irritated and irritating responders who fancy themselves witty and edgy.

and they often respond as anonymous contributers...

Here's a link to the one I threw together for the H Street Guide... Though I would love to do something even better if there are any H Street map artists out there! http://hstreetguide.com/h-street-guide-page.aspx
