Stealing $28k in Public Funds = 30 Days in Jail
The news just broke (via Mike DeBonis of the Post) that disgraced former ANC 5B Chair William Shelton will serve 30 days in jail. Those days will be served on weekends only. Pardon my language, but WTF is this shit? William Shelton stole more than $28,000 in public funds from ANC 5B. That was almost the entire bank account. Unless I grossly misread my sentencing guidelines, he ought to be serving 10-11 months. Again WTF? This is some bullshit.

It is outrageous, but just more of the same American double standard: rob a corner store for $20 and get years in prison, defraud the public and get a slap on wrist.

Look kid I don't know how long you've lived in DC and more specifically H street but this has been going on for as long as I've lived here (approaching four decades). Don't worry, you'll get used to the corrupt DC politics, just give it time.

Not sure I get the politics as usual angle. A Judge made a judgement. The judge isn't a DC politician. I'm not sure how this decision makes DC look stupid. I do think we need to review how we view politicians/leaders in this town. We need to peel back the reverence. If this incident helps do that then awesome. But If this is chalked up to one isolated event then we will be missing a teachable moment.
Let's also remember $30K isn't that much money. It's not even really real money when you look at DC gov't spending.
Perhaps here, the punishment fit the crime. I know people are upset. But the mod isn't always right.

The federal sentence guidelines. Access device fraud has a base of six. Kick it up four levels based on the amount that he stole (if it has been $30k it would have jumped by 6). So the range is 6-12 months, but he's right at the top of the loss ceiling. I feel like he should be facing at least 8 months.
