WP: Coming Soon to the Florida Market

The Washington Post produced this video about the future of the DC Farmers Market. The DC Farmers Market, which is located in the Florida Market, suffered a fire last October, and it's now undergoing a renovation. It will be a food market again once the work is complete. Based on the video, it's going to have about 40 vendors (that's fewer than before), and roughly 1/3 of those will be fulltime/permanent vendors. The rest will either rotate, or share space (operating only part of the week). Also, apparently we are going to start referring to the Florida Market as DC's meatpacking district. Also acceptable: Union Market.

Interesting fact: At the time of the fire, there was only one remaining vendor that actually farmed the food they sold.

Thanks for this update. I have been wondering for months when it would reopen.

I've missed having it available but if they are going to have better vendors with better products it's going to be a big win for the community.

They are going to have a big opening dinner there with DC's best chefs with the James Beard foundation. Tickets are only $250. This renovation is going to be huge.

i hope they don't brand it the meatpacking district. we are not nyc. union terminal market sounds best, but what do i know...

What's the history behind the name Union Market? I co-sign anonymous @7:23 that the Union Market name sounds better than the NYC-associated name "The Meatpacking District" (it also makes for less middle school humor fodder...ha).

the name union market or union terminal market has to do with the proximity to the train tracks of union station. in the olden days, goods arrived via these tracks and were easily moved into the market. take a look at a map. the tracks are closer than you might think

This feels like they are trying to build another Eastern Market type space, but with a bigger footprint to work in. I wish them the best, and hope it succeeds. It will take a while to turn some to the sketchier parts of the market around....

Clear case of pro-gentrification arson. I miss the butchers.

I am surprised they kept that shell at all. A market should not feel like a cramped warehouse, but should have a lot of light and air.

I dream of a large outdoor canopy with fruit/vegetable stalls, etc.
