Does it say something about me that I saw this headline in my RSS reader, and my first thought was "meth lab"?

He was running around 13th and i two nights ago - I think he's been away from home for a while.

IMGoph - I thought the exact same thing.

Hope the owner and the dog will be reunited. I'm sure he's owner is anxious to see him.

have you checked if he is micro-chipped? a vet or shelter should be able to scan him?

He looks delicious. I would have served him with sides of cold slaw and Mac and cheese.

A good resource for those who find a dog and want to help reunite it with its owner is the Facebook page "Lost and Found Dogs -- DC Metro Area."

There are many other sites that are useful for getting the word out and other steps to take to help find the owner, and Lost and Found Dogs frequently reposts a brief guide of what to do when you find a stray (making Craigslist ad and getting the dog scanned for microchip are two of the most effective).

Obviously, you can only keep the dog for as long as you are able, but please be aware that most of these dogs will be put down within a few days at the DC shelter.

Anon 6/24/12 5:34 PM here again. For the benefit of anyone trying to help this dog, I went ahead and scanned the posts on Lost & Found Dogs -- DC Metro Area back to the beginning of June and found no matches (although of course, it may have been reported missing earlier -- I ran out of time to look further).

Your comments about stray dogs being put down at the DC shelter within a few days is simply not true.
