The (mostly) local chain Manny and Olga's has announced plans to open an H Street location. They sell pizzas and subs for delivery and takeout. The press release did not specify a location.

Can someone tally up the number of places that sell/plan to sell pizza on H St?

New York Pizza
Liberty Tree
7-11
A pizza place in the old Birdlands?
A Pizza place at 14th & H?
Manny and Olga's?

Am I missing anyone?

Only the best one currently selling - New Citi Pizza. It's actually much better than the storefront lets on.

Maybe I got it on a bad night, but the one and only time I ordered from new shitty pizza it tasted like something sold at a hockey rink...

seriously, do these pizza establishments even evaluate the neighborhood demand / competition. Half of them will fail in the next year unless pizza becomes then new fried chicken...

Hearing the words jumbo slice make me violent. What an atrocious excuse for food.

More pizza? We need fro yo!!

Will H & Pizza deliver?

Is anyone familiar with Manny & Olga? And by that I mean, do they suck?

Good. Maybe at the end of the carnage, we'll be left with one Grimaldi's, or even a Pete's Apizza...

Competition is good.

marvelous pizza a few doors down from 7-11. the sauce is sweet, but other than that, it's pretty good, fast, cheap and convenient.

i hope its on the east end. since we lost our carryouts, i'm definitely looking forward to more quick/cheap food options.

New Citipizza is excellent and a great deal. The Old CitiPizza place was good too. Plus they deliver quickly, or at least when they say they will.

I had Manny and Olga's often in college. It's awful.

I would have loved to see a location for 2 Amys here...YUM

Citipizza is my stand-by for regular delivery pizza. Sicilian Pizza on Florida Ave isn't bad either. Sounds like H&Pizza will be a slightly more upscale option.

By the way, not on H Street but Menomale in Brookland is really good. Just opened last month and has really good Neapolitan pizza and subs. Good beer list too. For those looking for a 2 Amy's type place closer to the neighborhood.

New Citi Pizza would do so much more business if it improved its storefront. New coat of paint, get rid of the window bars, lower the counter -- not massive changes.

Manny and Olgas---terrible
Marvelous Pizza---worst pizza ever
New Citi Pizza--awful

No one has mentioned Liberty Tree--some of the best pizza in the city--ranks up there with two amy's, pizza paradiso, comet ping-pong--Greg, the owner and chef was the founder of Matchbox. Great neighborhood spot.

Pizza hierarchy on H

1- Liberty Tree
tied for 2nd Sicilian on Flordia ave & New Citi -cheesy bread is ridiculous

close by but worth the short trip:
Bistro Italiano (thin crust only)

I do have high hopes for H & Pizza, being right next to Taylor they better be good

My personal ranking of the H Street pizza places:

1) New Citi Pizza
2) Liberty Tree
3) 7-11
4) Safeway crap
5) "Marvelous" "Pizza"

Never had Manny & Olga's, so will be interested to try it. Love, love, love New Citi Pizza, though.

I am a faithful CitiPizza customer, but I wouldn't try to argue that it's anything special - just reliably decent.

The one time I tried Marvelous Pizza, the staff was very friendly, but the pizza was certainly the worst I'd had in years, perhaps ever.

i ordered two pizzas from sicilian pizza last night--the vegetariano and the artichoke spinach...OUTSTANDING!! really generous with the toppings and the crust is fantastic. that is my go-to for the last few months.

Hey folks! I had to get over to the westside on business this afternoon, and had a chance to stop in at Manny & Olga's Wisconsin Ave location.

Just wanted to let everyone know that, yes, Manny & Olga's is indeed, pretty wretched.

Also, I agree that Sicilian Pizza is about the best of the delivery options. Not good, mind you, but the best.

1) Liberty Tree (expensive, doesn't sell by the slice)
2) 7-11
the next two are way worse:
3) Marvelous (greasy, crappy)
4) New Citi (mushy, crappy, dirty)

Jannat Kebab in Kingman Park does a pretty decent pizza, but the gyros are even better.

Just put a Flippin' Pizza and a Julia's Empanada on H and then let's move on to getting more retail.

Oh, and while we're at it, let's put a Busboy's & Poets in the retail space at the new Atlas Flats at Atlas (or whatever it's called). The area could use a brunch spot with more than 3 menu items.

just go to the Denny's, DT. That place is great. The food is good, the service is good, and, if you're white, you get looked at like you're a unicorn while you eat. It's a great feeling!

Sicilian Pizza on Florida and West Virginia Ave. has got to have the best pizza ever! I think many folks must not know about it because if they did it would undoubtedly be ranked #1.

Anonymous said...

Speaking of Taylor.. I went there last week and it was awful. The boys have moved on and left all the quality up the illegial workers.

Sicilian Pizza is just down the street from my house. their pizza is not amazing, but I like it. They have an awesome carryout special for a large three topping pizza for under $10.

9:55,
Could we please refrain from:
1. Assuming that any Latino is an illegal immigrant;
2. Accusing the guys from Taylor of engaging in criminal activity (employing illegal immigrants).

StantonSez: off-topic, but in reax to Denny's comment, I have not been. I was boycotting and supporting the Cap City Diner. Particularly in light of the city subsidies offered to the big corporate chain, while the Diner guys got nothing but hassle from the bureaucracy.
But with the Diner's demise, I guess it's time to stop the boycott, which seems pointless. I suppose they are providing jobs in the community.
Any other boycotters out there? or was I alone?

So true and it was that way for me seven years ago. I think a few heads exploded while visiting the PG county Target too.

you all need to get your white asses to the Denny's, and I am not kidding. It is good food, good service, and good vibes. The diner failed because those dudes had an idea they could not execute. Not knocking them, but it's the truth. I went there often, always hoping for a better experience.

The folks at Denny's will give you an awesome breakfast. You can then get crazy with whatever gauge of surgical tubing you dig, at your own pace, and in your own way, properly filled up with some sweet eggy weggs.

Papa Johns and Dominos come to H st , so I just usually order from them.

Anon 11:30 -- we don't go to Denny's either, for the same reasons. Whether one liked the Diner or not, the city bent over backwards for Denny's while jobbing the Diner. If I wanted to live in the land of chains, I'd move to Fairfax or Laurel.

Not that I think it makes any difference, of course. Trust me, I'm under no illusions that our refusing to go to Denny's is hurting them in any way; all it accomplishes is my feeling better. But that's OK by me. I might or might not like Denny's food if I ate it; but I certainly don't *need* it. So it's no major sacrifice to skip it.

I tend to avoid chains when possible. They generally do a good job, and are often even franchises, so theoretically operated by a local. Just a personal preference to try to support independents. The tax breaks are also vaguely annoying. I have a feeling denny's will do fine without me, and it has brought jobs. h & pizza guys were in the other night, seem like good guys. Now,a total hijack. Tacos impalas will be making tacos at the pug on tuesdays starting tonight. Get pizza monday, tacos tuesday, mussels wed, toki on thursdays, a pug dog on fridays, and sticky on saturdays. Leave sunday nights for the new joints.

All you need to do is go to most every southern towns (and rural America in particular) and see how the national chains have utterly eviscerated local culture, and you'll lose your appetite.

No thanks.

Oh I agree completely. It's not special, but solid and tasty, which I think puts it above everything else that's around. The prices and delivery times are right (esp compared to Pizza Hut, Dominos and Papa Johns) and the pizza is always hot. I think expectations are low too so that helps when it exceeds them. Love CitiPizza!

You people just don't know pizza. Best pizza delivery for H street area is BY FAR Bistro Italiano. Liberty tree is ok but just ok. Meaning it's edible. Everything else mentioned is garbage. Hopefully H and Pizza will be good.

Best pizza in the area is the Italian Store.
