A look at what's going on in Trinidad, on H Street, and in the larger area north of Capitol Hill.

Star & Shamrock NOT Expanding

A reliable source informed me that ABRA filings notwithstanding, the Star and Shamrock has no current plans to expand the customer/bar area into their storage space.  It seems that the tavern filed, and immediately withdrew, their plans. Hopefully we will see more action from them in the future. I'd love to see an Irish breakfast.

If you're doing it right, you can't see after an Irish breakfast.

I'm actually worried about the Star & Shamrock. It used to be one of my favorite restaurants and the sandwiches were really good, but it's been steadily going downhill. Everything now seems to be cold or undercooked.

Yeah, their food has been terrible for a while, and everything seems really expensive. I'd be shocked if they were expanding, it's rarely packed in there.

Great concept, but it's never really come into it's own, IMO.

Yeah. The food is nasty in there.

The service there turned me off long ago.

I agree. Star & Shamrock has a nice location and space - why can't they get their service and food together?

I'm surprised by the negative comments on service. I've always had great service there and thought the food was generally pretty good. Especially the Irish Dip sandwich, curly fries, and Hebrew Genesis. Just don't get the chef salad.

I went there one night after waiting an hour for food that never showed up at the Argo. I had food in front of me pronto at Star and Shamrock even on a busy night.

@11:21

I went there for a week straight (okay, 5 days straight) and almost every time the number of bar staff outnumbered the number of patrons. Still, after 5 days I had maybe 4 sentences spoken to me. I stopped going. I went back occasionally over the following months, but it never really was any different. So now I haven't been there in a long time. Maybe it's changed.

The food was great, I can definitely agree with that. And there were plenty of sports on to watch while the staff didn't want to talk to you. Just my experience.

(just posted above)
I should also have mentioned I wasn't sure how not really having any specials during the weekday when no one else was in there was supposed to attract customers. That definitely didn't do much to give me a reason to keep coming on days that weren't Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. (but did plenty to help me in the way of writing double or triple-negative sentences!)
