Toki's Erik Teams w/DURKL at 1351 H Street

Following a multi-month effort to gage popular desires for a business at 1351 H Street, Popularise recently announced that the space will go to a joint venture between Toki Underground's Erik Bruner-Yang and the creators of local men's fashion line DURKL.

Here's how they described the project:

The concept will be based around an inviting market place environment spearheaded by collaboration between the creators of DURKL and Toki Underground; combining both fashion and food, while at the same time giving local vendors an opportunity to market and sell their products.

We believe that H Street is ready for something new and different. A space that will operate both day and night, during the week and on weekends, providing an offering as diverse as the neighborhood itself. We think of it like a new age Eastern Market. We are excited about the potential possibilities for this project, and look forward to further developing the concept with the input and support of our future customers.

Eater has more details on the business, which will combine the idea of a local food market with fashion, Asian cuisine, and craft cocktails. How's that for something different?

I dont even know what this is. This sounds like a mess created in a HS business class. However, with EBY's invlovement it might turn out OK. Basing that on the fact that Toki seems to be a success. Have to hope his input is greater than those of the Popularise wheel-reinventers

Fantastic news- a real retail win for H Street. It's does sound a bit unconventional but I would not bet against Erik Bruner-Yang.

Wonderful. I hope they bring in some decent produce and wholesome breads.

DC's hottest new club/restaurant/market is Makketo. This place has everything. Chinese doughnuts. Dumplings. Random Durkl attire. Coffee. Human bathmats.

This deal was done six months ago! I feel
Bad for the people who put time, effort and
hope into these NW frauds who wouldn't be anywhere without Daddy's money. They even insulted Sharkey / Joodlum in the Post! They have no class or business ethics. They didn't care about what NE wanted, they gave us what we already had. In the spirit of being different then NW I will not be supporting 1351 or it's occupants and I encourage everyone to boycott. Eric Yang of all people should understand H st. community and spirit, he didn't respect the residents agreeing to this charade six months ago so he won't get my support as a resident of NE. The Miller's and it's buildings will be treated the same way, community must stand together and all those hopefuls who entered on good faith deserve support.

Don't support 1351 H street! We are not NW.

i guess all of sharkey’s friends voting wasn’t enough to secure the building for him and his “joodlum”. i wonder how many of them actually live near h street. guess it wasn't a popularity contest after all. maybe sharkey will just lease a place on h on his own and make it happen. show nw whos boss!!!

Why not any of the top ten? Crunkcakes was a great local choice. Fraud. Simple. NW taking over our H st!

Dude crying about NW has a complex. It's ok.

Anyone who thinks NW is anything like NW is mistaken. The Miller boys should spend sometime outside NW without silver spoons and learn a bit of the neighborhood they are ruining. Wonder who they already picked for Petworth project.

i hardly see this project as "ruining" the neighborhood. i think most would agree

To throw blame at Erik and Durkl guys is absurd. Ya, they didn't win the popularity contest but that's not the point of Popularise. I would have liked Joodlum but I'm cool with whats going in place becaues its good to have retail on Hst. I applaud any business owner because they take the risk in opening up shop.

SO FUNNNYY!!! WHATS WONG MILLERS? YOU CANT CONTROL ALL THE COMMENTS AND DIRECTION ON FRONZEN TROPICS LIKE YOU DO ON POPULARISE? YOU GUYS ARE TIRED!!!

Why are local blogs and media not more interested in this story? The Millers held a "contest" that no one had a chance of winning because the deal with Yang was done prior to site launch. Perhaps the Millers could look up the definition of CONTEST and POPULARIZE. They owe the NE community an apology, as well as everyone who entered on good faith. The Post comments were despicable and shows their lack of business experience. Yang can't handle food standards or staff on a 15 seat restaurant, buying noodles and using bouillon cubes already; how can he handle such a large space? Karma is a bitch. Wonder if Yang has a rich Daddy to bail him out when the Millers toss him under the bus for failing.

I won't go there, its the new Toyland / Rocket Bar in my eyes.

I hope Frozen and others make more of an effort to report the truth on these guys rather then fluff.
