Update on Last Night's Robbery Shooting

The male victim who was shot in the jaw last night by two assailants who robbed him of his iPhone last night on G Street is in stable condition. Fox5 reports that he resisted, but NBC4 is reporting that he did not resist, and was shot anyway. Both stations report that the assailants had his phone before they shot him. Please keep the victim in your thoughts.

It's an iPhone, why can't they track it? The DC police need to get the equipment to triangulate the position of stolen phones. I think this would be a good investment.

Any one else thought about a bait and kill, ie, one person on the phone as bait and 5 more close enough to kill whoever takes the bait?

So disturbing either way. My heart goes out to the victim.

I feel as if the MPD is not taking the recent uptick in crime very seriously. Last night they had a squad car parked on the very corner where this happened. Same thing happened when there was a stabbing about a year ago. They put a car on the corner for 1 night and then that's it. If this were Woodley Park, there would be mass outrage and they would have beat cops. Police sitting in the Autozone parking lot playing with his laptop is NOT patroling!

The cop in the autozone parking lot is indeed not patrolling. He is on an OT detail paid by private business to keep people from parking in that lot. Now the 7-11 is another story...

I agree there would be mass outrage elsewhere. Too bad there is not here. A few pissy people on a blog isn't going to accomplish anything. Try contacting your councilmember or the mayor's office. Or show up to a PSA meeting. Or get involved in neighborhood walks. Or turn on your porch light.

There's legislation pending before congress that would require the carriers to keep track of the unique identifier that these phones have. And when it's reported stolen, to shut it down so it's useless. Which would make stealing one pointless. They already do this in most of Europe.

Of course, this would mostly benefit liberal scum living in the degraded bi-coastal urban areas, so the you can count on the Republicans to kill it out of principal.

Anyone know how the victim is doing :-(

Why not allow citizens easier access to guns. In VA punks think twice because they have a conceal carry law. I'm not talking deep rural areas, I'm talking alexandria and Arlington.

I think that's better than one person as bait and then jumping the criminal.

At think point however, I may not be walking around H for a while. I've have enough health problems. Don't need to be shot for nothing.

Not to change the location, but does anyone know what happened this morning/last night on the corner of Oates and Hollbrook Streets? There were several MPD cop cars and motorcycles and at least two sergents (or so it appeared) this morning.

Has anyone considered organizing a night or a week of porch lights on? Not necessarily as a deterrent but to let criminals know we are home and watching? It might send a message, but who knows. I realize that is not 'eco-friendly' but totally worth it. Imagine every porch light on in the H St. corridor... I'm definitely interested in helping out but admittedly not an experienced grass roots organizer.

Seriously people?...we've got criminals living in our neighborhood armed with Glock 9mm semi-automatic handguns and the solution is more porch-lights?! You've got to be kidding me. Where I was raised people respected their neighbors. For many reasons, not the least of which was that you knew they probably owned or carried a gun. We will continue to be disrespected, preyed upon, vandalized, mugged, and shot until we are allowed the same rights that nearly every other American has. The solution is not porch lights-- it's re-taking our second amendment rights.

A small update:

Apparently the victim had surgery today and is in good spirits. I had no idea until just this evening, but apparently he lives directly across the street from me. A neighbor gave me the update. He's a young guy who just moved to the area from Northern Virginia a few weeks ago with his fiancee. According to the neighbor who gave me this information, the report that he was shot after cooperating with the guys who robbed him IS accurate. I sincerely hope they catch the animals who did this.

Glad to hear he's doing better. What an unfortunate welcome to our neighborhood :(

shot after cooperating?

that's mind numbing.

so they were just sadists?

as for commenter jim kackson, that "bait and kill" idea is the stupidest way for six people to go to jail for conspiracy to commit murder ever.

I agree with the porch light suggestion. No - we can't stop criminals by having our lights on, but we can lower the chances of criminal activity on our streets by lighting them up.

Talk to any Capitol Hill realtor, and they will tell you the stats behind leaving porch lights on.

Consider my house porch light on every night from now on.

Was this also a "botched robbery"? These guys wanted to kill someone or destroy someone's life just for fun. And a few bucks for a phone. Hanging out on a street corner near you.

White victim? Black assailants? No reason to report on such irrelevant facts.

12:00,
MPD did not release the race of the victim. an earlier post referenced both assailants as black males.

From MPD list serve, no direct response re more foot patrols:

Q:
Given the 2 recent shootings in this area (the former at 7th and H St. NE), are there plans to increase police presence and foot patrols of the blocks surrounding H? If not, what other strategies are being considered?

A:
The PSA lieutenant has dedicated more resources in that area. Thanks for your concern.

Another thing from MPD listserv is there was a similar armed robbery on Wylie Street with the same descriptions of the robbers around the same time. They also pulled a gun, although fortunately didn't harm that victim.

the race of the thugs is relevant when a different one is being targeted...so far all of this violence has been black on white.

8:12,
Are you sure about that? I don't know the race of most of the victims.
