H &pizza Opens Tomorrow

DSC_0049
I was able to attend the preview night at H &pizza tonight, and I was very impressed. We tried several pizzas. My favorites were the Kiss and Fire, Grecian Market, and Moonstruck.  They are located at 1118 H Street. You can read a more detailed (sorry, I'm busy packing) review on District Cuisine, where you can also take a look at their full menu. Follow them on Twitter @andpizza.

Anybody know their hours? Or their website? I tried googling "hand pizza" but that was less than helpful...

This place looks impressive. At those prices it should be extremely, extremely popular.

Tonysmallframe,
Pretty sure you could get carryout.

Opening on a Friday night, rather than in mid-week when things might be less crazy: that's brave!

Menu looks good -- I wish them much success!

Got the Maverick pizza to go today for lunch and it was great. Good price too (for DC). One pizza is more than enough for one person and could potentially feed two. Very friendly staff that are excited to be open. I have a feeling they will do very well.

Hand job.

This place sounds great! I wish them the best and look forward to trying their pizza!

Don't mean to be party pooper but I have noticed that most restaurants on H-street start out great (Souk, Pho Grill) but the quality declines rapidly as soon as the owner takes their customers for granted. I was at Pho grille this week and the entree I ordered was awful. The chicken was charred black, the noodles were cold, nothing like I remember having when they first opened. I noticed that the owners are no more attending the restaurant in person is when things start going downhill. On the other hand Shwafel has been consistently good because the owner is present 24/7 and it reflects on the quality. I hope H&Pizza doesn't fall into the same trap and wish them a success!

foodie -- I'm not arguing with you about the quality of the food you received at Pho Grill (for all I know, it was awful). But you singled out the fact that the noodles were cold; and it's worth noting that except for soups like Pho or Bun Bo Hue, Vietnamese noodle dishes are *supposed* to have noodles that are not hot, but rather have been allowed to cool to room temperature. Then again, maybe you meant *cold*, like just out of the fridge?

foodie said...

The noodles were cold as if straight out of the refrigerator. Also, I recall the first time I had the noodle salad even the presentation was perfect. Everything laid out in nice formation. The one I ordered was as if someone just through a bunch of items together and then put a lump of ground peanuts on the top. It was clearly prepared in an amateurish manner. When there is no owner present the employees always tend to slack I have seen that even at my own work place. It's just human nature.

And also missing were a bunch of ingredients (carrots and I believe may be shaved water chestnuts)

Foodie,

Totally agree with you. Souk used to be a great little place on H St., but the last few times I've gone for dinner the food and vibe of the place were downright awful.

Some of these restaurants are going to learn that they better raise their game otherwise they'll be closing down.

I don't think it's that the owners take customers for granted but rather that the owners themselves get lazy and let the business operate on cruise control. A hallmark of a good business is the attention to details and personal overseeing by the owner.

The line was longer than Horace and Dickies. It took about 30 minutes but well worth the wait. This is the best pizza in the DC area for the price by far. It was made exactly how I like. And, yes they do carryout.

Does anyone know what the hell is going on with Tacos Impala?! I have been daydreaming for months about sinking my teeth into their deliciousness but I'm afraid the construction has stalled from what I can see. Any deets would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Anon 8:03: I spoke to Troy Hickman (the proprietor of Imapala Taqueria) a few weeks ago about the restaurant's progress. He said the big hold-up is that nearly everything going inside the restaurant (tables, chairs, etc.) is being hand-crafted in Mexico, and it's taking a little longer than planned. But he's still working hard on the place, and is looking forward to being up and running soon.

Thank you so much for the update on Impala Anon10. It sounds like it definitely going to worth the wait! I was just hoping it wasn't another instance like sweet charlestons which was planned but got nixed for whatever reason.

Was Sweet Charleston's nixed? What happened?

This place looks great I wish them well. Even these days, it should still be possible to get a good small pizza for less than 10 bucks.

6:08,
Sweet Charleston's pulled out.

I want H&Pizza to do well but the pizza was absolutely horrible, soggy, salty, some weird cheese on it that did not resemble mozzarella as stated on the menu. Not to mention waiting 45 minutes for a pie and having to fork over money for it. I hope they get their sh*t together because it could have been good.

We went to H & Pizza yesterday for lunch and the two of us were able to split one and it was great...wonderful flavor...YUM.
I also was at Pho Grill this past week and had the lemon grass chicken bun (cold noodle salad) and as always was great. Yes, the chicken had a nice char, but that added flavor for me and the chicken was cooked through and still moist. Our bowls were put together beautifully including a green onion fan in the center. Please give them another chance as one time my bowl wasn't perfect, but thought it may have been an off time and yes, it was and always since has looked great.

I wholeheartedly disagree with Anon 1105. The pizza I ordered at h and pizza was beyond delicious and I consider myself a pizza Connisiour! The whole grain crust was amazing, the Parmesan cheese perfect and the toppings were fresh and cooked to perfection. Sure if you are looking for a greasy pie call dominos but I rank these guys on par with paridiso, mellow mushroom or 2 Amy's. Or even better really and best of all it is pretty healthy!

@Anon 11:15- I'm sure it's relatively healthy (relative to other franchise pie slingers) but there's no way any pizza is healthy.

Other comments about Pho Bar & Grill echo my sentiments- lots of potential, but the place is really off sometimes, and not just the food- disconnected waitstaff, a place that can't figure out if it's a noodle joint or some sort of club, ridiculous prices ($9 house wine)?! It was spotty at the beginning but they seemed to be trying to make improvements. I'll keep trying them just because I really, really want passable Pho in walking distance.

I've been to H and Pizza twice now. The Maverick and the Farmer's Daughter are both great. I had both for lunch (leftover) the next day and the pizza held up well overnight. I am pretty impressed for the price. I hope they keep up with the quality.

We went around 5pm on Sat and there was hardly any wait. As we ate, a lot of families came in and the vibe was really friendly, great music, happy staff. I also loved the old-timey H St photos on the walls.

My boyfriend got the Maverick, which as already mentioned was delicious, but I decided to be contrary and got the caprese salad. It was wonderful: fresh cherry tomatoes, homemade vinaigrette and very generous helping of mozzarella. They also have a really nice selection of drinks: Boylan sodas and three craft beers in cans (Dale's Ale, DC Brau & Apollo).

Let me echo the stream of positive comments for H &Pizza. Went there twice this weekend: once Saturday at lunch time, and once Sunday at dinner time. Both times, the line was long, and admittedly moved a little slower than I would have preferred, but the results were well worth it.

Between pizzas ordered myself and others, I was able to sample a basic cheese, the Backyard Garden, the Farmer's Daughter, and a custom pizza with the garlic spread, mozzarella, roasted peppers, caramelized onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes. Raves across the board!

Was there last night, and the pizza is delicious!! I'm eating leftovers right now. The absolutely need to figure out how to get the moving, maybe incorporate a pager system. I'm happy that they've opened and know that I'll be eating here often.

Great pizza! Very unique to the area. Crust was great...sauce was great...and the cheese was great. I'll be back very soon.

I admit that I didn't have high expectations when I first heard about H & Pizza, mostly because of my skepticism that good pizza could be baked on a conveyor belt. But I went on opening night and was (happily) proved very wrong. I got the Maverick and Farmer's Daughter, and both were excellent. Also, it's nice to get an adult-sized pizza for $9.50 (w/ tax).

Super late and not much new to add but i figured i woudl say that my experience was great there. food was really good, staff was nice and music was good too. A welcome addition to H St.
