Report of Police Activity at Hechinger Mall

A read sent in the following (about half an hour ago):

Something just went down at the Not-So-Safeway at 1601 Maryland Ave.  I live in Flats at Atlas overlooking the store.  By my count, something like 9-10 cop cars there (including an officer in an intimidating segway) and the entire parking lot is cordoned off.

Anyone have details?

UPDATE
++++++++++++++

It was a bomb threat.

hahahahahah @ Flats at Atlas people commenting on crime.

Seriously, it was probably not much of anything, and probably not anything that would cause you immediate harm, especially with 9 cop cars around.

Well, if the entire parking lot was shut down it sounds like it could be something. Maybe a suspicious package could do it?

Maybe it was the fashion police at the Ross! *zing!!!*

Why can't people that live there comment on crime? I appreciate the heads up no matter who it comes from when stuff is happening in the area.

Somewhat related:

Have the rest of you noticed that the DC MPD Crime Map application has been down for months? Has it moved or what? If not, it would be good to pressure the government to get it back up. I'd like to see the data as anecdotally, it feels as if there has been a little wave this year.

that safeway and adjacent "green space' is a shithole.

MPD took down the online crime map because it showed crime information that conflicted with the "official" crime information that was later released to the public by other means. So, they took the system offline until they can figure out how to get it to report the massaged crime stats, not the real ones.

Not a very nice grocery store but I wouldn't say it's not-so-Safeway. I've never felt unsafe there that is.

Yep. People actually used that crime map, and that did not go over well with the " crime is down from last year" crowd. However, the map of tree plantings works.

There was a bomb threat there yesterday.

Anon 3:44 PM -- Don't be pejorative toward "Flats at Atlas people". They're investing in our community and, in this case, sharing information about a potentially-dangerous situation. One of the most annoying things about reading this blog is when I come across the occasional comment that hints at new people not being welcome here or should not expect a safe community because the writer (of the blog entry) had to deal with unsafe situations for years. I don't care whether you've lived here for 30 years or for 30 days, you're entitled to wanting a safer community. And I agree with others that the Safeway, though not ideal in terms of the food and services it offers, is not unsafe.

To the new neighbor at the Flats, welcome to the area and thanks for sharing the news.

3:44,
Well put. I think we all have something to contribute whether we've been here 7 days, or 70 years. It's more about what we put into it. And yeah, public safety is a very valid concern for all of us.

Wow "not-so-Safeway".....haven't heard that in a hot minute. Those jokes are something that comes out of the mouthes of people who have lived in DC for about 20 minutes....

Police confirmed last night at a Friends of Kingman Park meeting that it was a fake bomb threat, as Anon 6:16 mentioned above.

Sound a like someone no wanted a worky worky.

Anon 6:19- Agree about not not being pejorative toward "Flats at Atlas people".

However, it's a bit insulting to the rest of the hood when a newcomer starts with their own limited (and incorrect) view commenting that the Safeway is not-so-safe. You get out of the neighborhood what you put in.

11:17,
I think the Safeway is perfectly safe, but the "Unsafe Safeway" is an old nickname for the Hechinger Mall Safeway.

When you have to explain something like "Unsafeway" to someone so dense and humorless, is it even worth it? Unsafeway is also what many use to refer to the Safeway in SF off Geary Blvd near Fillmore. It's a general term for a ghetto safeway, and Hechinger qualifies. Anyone who says it's not really all that ghetto is themselves truly hardcore and I salute such a tough hombre.

FWIW, I've lived off the starburst for 3 years and go as infrequently as possible to that "supermarket" so as to avoid the insane lines and pervasive surly atmosphere.

Can we agree that the self-rightoues finger-wagging scolds taking umbrage at every little comment are getting a tad tiresome? LIghten up, squarepants.

I don't find that Safeway to be unsafe but they don't always carry things that the non-ghetto eat. For example the couple of times I went they had pigs feet, but no chicken breasts. Also you are way more likely to get stuck behind a mother with a WIC check and that takes forever! Oh yeah and ya see a whole bunch of EBT there!

if we're going to be completely accurate, the Hechinger Mall Safeway is known colloquially as the "Suicide Safeway" - the UnSafeway is down near Potomac Ave metro

As a beautiful single white woman I do my shopping at the Safeway at 5th and K, NW. I'm hoping a man sees me buying some whole wheat pasta and Luna bars and kashi and takes me away!

Using the word "ghetto" as an adjective is both poor grammar and poor form.

I have no idea what the poster above me means by ""pervasive surly atmosphere", but if you are making class-based judgments about grocery stores, perhaps people are responding to the vibe you're putting out. My main problems with that Safeway are the atrocious lines and occasional shelf disarray (resulting in some items being found a good distance away from their respective price tag on the racks).

we have called it the UnSafeway, ever since moving to the Hood, a year ago.

THere are no guns or bullets going around, but we appreciate the police officers on duty there.

The commenter is talking about the pervasive surly attitude that makes DC customer service so famous. It's talking about the slow moving employees, the bad attitude of the employees and general attitude that Safeway owes them something.
