On behalf of my neighborhood, I am embarrassed by this woman's comments.

And since when can you get a 1-bedroom condo for $100k?

this is like an elementary school kid's "what i did over summer vacation" essay

perhaps this lady should get her flak jacket back and pretend she is somewhere more exotic like beirut. i would think someone so adventurous who has had to wear a flak jacket would have a lower bar for gritty

This is perhaps the most ill-informed and ham fisted writing on DC neighborhoods I have ever read. FT is usually much better- this author obviously has no clue.

right, because Korean grocers dont get shot in their neck on H st. Or Major's Carry out is at the nadir of societal evolution. Give me a break. H st is a dump and I love it. Keep it trashy. Keep the rents cheap. And keep the damn yuppy Hill staffers out!

As another beautiful single white woman I am embarrassed by this woman's comments.

I don't get the outrage over calling H Street gritty. It is a street that saw years of disinvestment and still has many vacant lots, and large swaths have little foot traffic/retail activity. It’s not a vibrant working class shopping district or hipster playground like Williamsburg, Wicker Park, the Mission, etc.

Overall, the piece was positive on DC. She acknowledged the obvious, DC isn't an immigrant packed, dense global city like NY or London. But, it has charming leafy neighborhoods, some nice restaurant rows, and a generally high quality of life.

I agree with @anon 12:09, in that the piece was positive on DC and it wasn't necessarily bashing H st. I live in Trinidad and hangout on H st all the time, I don't think its gritty because my level of acceptance is obviously different from hers. I can see how she used that word though.
