Rainbow Clothing Robbed Last Night

Here's an email from MPD explaining last night's robbery. I'm glad no one was seriously injured.

This evening at approximately 8:15PM, First District personnel were dispatched to 823 H Street, NE, (Rainbow Clothing Store) for a robbery of an establishment.  A black male, light complexion, 5'4" 140lbs, wearing a ski mask, black and orange jacket, and blue jeans, armed with a handgun forced his way into the establishment prior to closing, and demanded an employee give him the money in the cash register and safe.  As the employee was attempting to retrieve the money, the male struck the employee in the back of the head with a gun.  Thereafter, the male obtained an undetermined amount of money and fled out the rear of the store.  There were no injuries associated with this offense.

An immediate canvass of the area for the suspect produced negative results.

The First District Detectives Office and Robbery Squad are investigating this offense.

The police hang out at the 7-11, just doors away.

For the 100th time-- They need police at 8th and H 24/7. Everyone knows this.

Annon 10:04 you are correct...there is so much crap that happens at that corner it is awful. Once I saw a woman with her hand down a man's pants pumping the ahhum...People hang out there selling, buying, etc and now this..enough. If Rappaport had done the remodel, I think that this issue may go away..Why, oh why did they change their minds?????

10:42,
I believe they are waiting for the streetcar to start rolling.

There is also the outstanding issue of leases. I'm still confused why a new lease was issued to 7/11 if there was a plan to demolish the strip mall at 8th and H. Apparently, the 7/11 lease will last for several more years, minimum, and Rappaport is trying to work out some kind of arrangement with them.

Alan,
I've heard something about 7-11 having a spot in the renovated space, but I don't really have any details on that.

10:04 -- you do realize that police officers respond to incidents in the neighborhood that may take them away from a fixed post, right?
