Double (Non-Fatal) Shooting 1000 Block of Bladensburg Road

Screen Shot 2013-02-18 at 10.40.08 PM
I don't have official confirmation regarding on which side of Bladensburg Road  the shooting occurred, but comments place it on the west side (Trinidad).

A double shooting brings this holiday weekend to a violent end. According to reader reports on Twitter, the shooting occurred at about 9:15 tonight. One Twitter user reports hearing 4-6 gunshots, and it sounds like at least 14 MPD vehicles responded. Get more on the Twitter conversation after the jump.

This happened on the Trinidad side of Bladensburg directly in front of Stantons. The car then crashed a block down at the corner of Oates & Bladensburg.

Yes, it happened on the Trinidad side, not the Carver Terrace side. I walked by the scene shortly after when cops were there.

I certainly couldn't imagine paying all that money renting a place in a neighborhood where this happens.....let alone paying over $300,000 for a tiny row house!

7:37,
You are aware that stuff like this has happened on U Street NW in recent memory? The difference is that there it happened in broad daylight.

Umm....I lived on U Street for years before moving to the hill about 10 years ago, and believe me U St. Was not nearly as dangerous then as Trinidad and that area are.

8:09,
I'm not making an overall comparison, just saying that this sort of thing happens in other parts of the city too. (including Capitol Hill).

But not on such a consistent basis.

Um, Trinidad isn't exactly prone to this sort of thing.

I'd say Trinidad used to be very dangerous and violent, then it was calm. Now we seem to be having a surge.

Are these incidents all related? Is there a drug gang staking out turf in Trinidad or is this just a lot of local bad attitude?

We had on that same block,2 older men get shot late at night.

Pat,
Two incidents in two months do not a surge make. That's a high traffic area. Prior to the incident with the older men, which occurred in December, when was the last fatal shooting in Trinidad? When was the last non-fatal shooting in Trinidad? The other incidents right there that come two mind are four robberies at the 7-Eleven. And those were all committed by the same guy, a former 7-Eleven employee who has since been arrested.

I would very much doubt that the two incidents are related. It sounds like the people in the car probably had some altercation with the shooter. I don't know the motive with the older men.

As for drug gangs, I keep hearing that drug trafficking is down in Trinidad.

It may well be the case that drug trafficking is down in the area relative to years past, but it's still hard to argue that Trinidad, and Kingman Park where I live are "safe" neighborhoods. I made the decision to buy here in 2010 and don't regret moving here from Logan Circle, but I do think it's more dangerous than the 14th St/U St area. Particularly in terms of muggings and armed assaults. Yes there have been shootings on U and in this area but there have been more muggings and robberies in the first district than the third, which is why MPD has been focusing efforts in our area. We should be clear eyed about the realities of living in this area where drug dealing and street crew are still very active even if less brazen than 5 or 10 years ago. To say that Trinidad, for example, is better now than it was during the 90's is pretty misleading since it was like a war zone back then. Simple comparisons may be true but don't paint an accurate picture of just how dangerous the H St area remains. I'm not hyping unreasonable or irrational fear, mind you. I like living here on balance but there are safety risks people should fully consider before buying here. TL;DR Caveat Emptor.

The whole city is seeing problems (maybe not Georgetown). Let me quote some reports from the U Street, Logan, Dupont area in February (date in parenthesis is date on blog I'm copying this from):

- (feb 2) Early AM Robbery with Force and Violence, 1200 Block M Street NW

- (feb 3) Sunday AM Robbery with Knife, 1300 Block Q Street NW

- (feb 11) 7 AM Robbery with Gun, 1800 Block 12th Street NW

- (feb 12) Two People Stabbed on U Street Early Sunday Morning

- (feb 15) Police Seek Suspect in T Street NW Armed Robbery

- (feb 16) Friday Evening Robbery with Force and Violence, 9th and S NW

- (feb 17) Early Sunday Morning Stabbing, 15th and N NW

I do think these are more highly traveled areas, so the violence per person would be higher in Trinidad/Carver Langston/Hill/H Street vicinity. But it's not like you are able to avoid this altogether.

Lately when I walk around U Street I am very aware of my surroundings after reading about these types of incidents (stabbings in particular).

I'll be honest, I would much rather live on U Street than where I am now...but it's not necessarily because I don't feel safe where I am. To me it is a personal preference based on the higher foot traffic and metro accessibility, but I do think a lot of people are ruling out Trinidad and close-in areas because of the fear "it's not safe"...and many are missing out on some of the better values that still exist within a next-to-nothing drive (or bike) of the nation's Capitol.

I think something needs to be done about the loitering in-front of Stantons as well as the other liquor stores nearby. It seems like there is always a large group of people informant of that place. Roses liquor seems even worse.

Interesting. Relative to the DC market, $300k for row house is extremely reasonable (yes even for this area). Also, if you wanted to live in a neighborhood where a shooting has never happened, you wouldn't be able to live in DC.

"but I do think a lot of people are ruling out Trinidad and close-in areas because of the fear "it's not safe"..."

Tell that to the folks who are buying rowhouses at $500K and above in the last 30 days...

Anonymous said...

Well it really isn't all that safe, but it is close to fun parts of the city. It's a trade-off; people will place a higher premium on one factor vs another based on their respective preferences.

What is perfectly safe to one person may be totally unsafe to another. I'd bet that whoever says Trinidad is unsafe does not live in the area, or has for only a short period of time. Housing prices are on the rise, which is a start #momentum

I just looked it up (could still be wrong) but over the last 30 days there are no houses that sold above $500k in Carver Langston, one in Trinidad, and less than a handful total when you factor in Florida over to H...mainly on I Street near 11th and the "million dollar house"...which wasn't a million dollars.

But I see your point, there are people willing to move over here. And I give them credit for foresight and common-sense in getting relative value for their money.

I agree with 10:18, there are plenty of people I talk to who still haven't even been to H Street, and there is no way they are venturing to Trinidad. That will change. Prices are rising and there are lots of houses listed in the upper-$400k range.

Having been here long enough to remember when Logan Circle was a bullet-riddled hell-hole, I can tell you that folks buying $500k are going to be quite happy with their decision in 5-10 years. And that every person that buys one of those houses makes it less likely you're going to get mugged in 5 years.

They were shooting at what I can only assume is a crack house/heroine den because the building the car was in front of is rolling at all hours. I live within viewing distance of the shooting and crazy stuff is always happening on that street.
