Capitol Hill Book Club Meeting

cover

Another announcement from the co-ed Capitol Hill Book Club:

Our next book will be Swamplandia! by Karen Russell and we will meet for a half-way discussion on Monday, March 18th at 7pm at
Cafe 8 on Capitol Hill: 424 8th St SE
Washington,DC. (202) 547-1555

The final discussion will be in April TBD. Email ebeth07@gmail.com for updates and questions.

Thirteen-year-old Ava Bigtree has lived her entire life at Swamplandia!, her family’s island home and gator-wrestling theme park in the Florida Everglades. But when illness fells Ava’s mother, the park’s indomitable headliner, the family is plunged into chaos; her father withdraws, her sister falls in love with a spooky character known as the Dredgeman, and her brilliant big brother, Kiwi, defects to a rival park called The World of Darkness. As Ava sets out on a mission through the magical swamps to save them all, we are drawn into a lush and bravely imagined debut that takes us to the shimmering edge of reality.

This book was up for a Pulitzer and didn't win. I can understand why - it is too contrived with no character development. Good luck choking this one down. My copy is at Browse if anyone wants a semi-used one.

Yeah, I couldn't get through this one either, thought I was thinking of trying again in anticipation of my Florida vacation. She does capture the mood of the place very well.

Final discussion will be on April 8th at 7 at Star and Shamrock. We're all in agreement about it being sub-par. Come out and decide on the next selection.

Thinking about recommending a David Eggers book for the next one to the group.
