H Street Coffeehouse & Cafe Opens Today

I am thrilled to announce the opening of H Street Coffeehouse and Cafe today. I have very much missed having a place to meet friends at night for a simple cup of tea/coffee and light bite.

I peered into the window last night. Unfortunately the place looks less welcoming than Sova did. It's more open, more modern, and the decor seems to say, "come in, get your drink, and leave." I hope I'm wrong about that, but we'll see....

i don't see any prices listed for the food, so that must be free? cool!

I hope the coffee is better this time around. I tried the coffee that they had at the pop-up space at the Biergarten and it was 10x better than what Sova used to have.

I actually liked Sova's coffee, so I'm looking forward to it based on Krumpus's comment

Welcome to the new coffeehouse! I look forward to visiting when I'm home.
One last shout out to Frank and SOVA...I will miss you and your place Frank. You were there through thick and thin and when I think of H St. before it became the next big thing SOVA will always be there.

Was there today. Coffee was great. Food was meh. More starbucks sterile and louder than before but hopefully they will settle into a comfortable neighborhood gathering place that continues to serve great coffee.

I was there today. The coffee was noticeably better than before. It didn't have that over-roasted taste that SOVA's had before. I was pretty happy with it. I didn't eat anything so I can't say how the food is.

The interior is a bit blander than it was before. The second floor is gone. The downstairs feels a lot smaller than before as well. They got rid of the thin narrow table in the front that was usually good for a single person to sit at and read a paper at while waiting for their food.

Had really good homemade soup last night. The place has a lot more light, more tables in the back, and it is clean. I like it, and I will be back.

Really Krumpus! You just sound like a Sova hater. Better than Intelligentsia. I don't think so. You're entitled to your opinion, but saying this is 10x better reduces your credibility, significantly.

I was there this morning. The coffee was good, but I wouldn't say better than before. The food was okay, nothing special. Looks like some similar stuff as before. I'll try more stuff sometime, but I don't feel as warm in this space. Can't see myself hanging out here, but I guess they don't want that anyway.

Oh, and anon 5:23, Sova was also super clean 5 years ago, or whenever they opened.

I'm sorry, but I'm clearly a Sova loyalist. Been going for 4 years, and it just doesn't feel the same.

I call them as I see them. The coffee at SOVA always tasted burnt to me and I wasn't getting French Roasts. I really do prefer the newer coffee. That's about where my preference ends.

For the most part, I didn't have SOVA. I never had an issue with the countertops and I prefer the old layout of SOVA to the new one of the H Street Coffeehouse. It felt bigger for starters. I really miss the upstairs space as you could always find a table there.

I also miss the old Sova. THis place seems to have little personality. Will there be any effort to get art up on the walls?

sarahmulca,
Art is coming.

I'm sorry to see the upstairs gone. I fully understand that it's not lucrative to allow people to linger all day over a cup of coffee but I'll really miss the environment that Sova created to allow for that. It was nice to see people doing work, chatting with friends, etc. This place feels more like a Starbucks and the name is pretty awful.

I dropped by and had some coffee earlier today. It was about the same quality as SOVA, maybe slightly worse, though I'm disappointed to hear they'll no longer be a dependable source for Intelligentsia. Didn't have any food, but the pastry options look pretty similar.

What they've done with the space, though, is an absolute tragedy. SOVA was lived-in and unique and colorful and comfortable. H Street Coffee House looks like it might as well be in Foggy Bottom. SOVA was always more about the space than the coffee for me, so this is about the worst thing that could happen. Oh well, guess I don't fit their customer profile anyway.

This thread is starting to read like a Portlandia sketch. Good grief.

The space is now much brighter, but it's less comfy, it now has more of an internet cafe than living room feel. SOVA was pretty solid for espresso drinks and H Street Coffeehouse is as well.

So no more Intelligentsia? If not, what is the new place serving?

Hi all,
As everyone I'm said SOVA is gone and I wish the owners good luck is not easy been an entrepenuer. Though I would also like to remind them that this is a more artsy neighborhood and neighbors appreciate a place that is welcoming and more genuine otherwise it will be the same than going to a starbucks. SOVA was an institution and we all love to go there to read, chat and and enjoy coffee/wine.

Delicious breakfast sandwich and latte this morning. A well-run establishment, quick and polite service.

I had been a regular at SOVA and have been to H Street Coffee dozens of times. However, their coffee is very mediocre as is their food, I do also miss the feel that SOVA had compared to the sterile and uninviting new space. However, I will likely keep going on days that I cannot go to Peregrine
