why can't these people behave themselves? seriously, been here 8 years in this neighborhood. I see a bunch of new places to drink alcohol, but violence is still going on

What do you mean by "these people"?

Maybe he means "B/M, 50 yoa, 5'9", unknown clothing"?

That intersection at 8th and H is kind of nasty. I wonder if it has something to do with the element that hangs out there.

really? are we pretending now we don't know who "these people" are? how very politically correct! just hang out some afternoon at the corner of H and 8th Street. better yet, wear a skirt if you have a real sense of adventure and enjoy the gauntlet of comments from the loitering assholes and drunkards.

We all know who "These people" are and so does Anon. 6:09. The sooner "those people" get out of the neighborhood or change the better off we'll all be!

I can't speak to the skirt wearing issues, but for the huge amount of people that congregate there, I think there are few issues.

Perhaps crowd presence keeps crime down. Would be interesting to see a crime map.

There was the sneaker shooting but I wouldnt consider that a result of the 8th and H crowd. There just happens to be a DTLR there.

Most of the people there are just waiting for buses

Many of the people are loitering there and being creepy.

The best thing that could happen for that corner is the H Street Connection redevelopment...the neighbors need to push the developer to get started!

8th and H is a absolute mess of drunk, littering, loitering, cat calling, riff-raff.

I wish they would get one of those big temporary spot lights and put it right there!

"8th and H is a absolute mess of drunk, littering, loitering, cat calling, riff-raff." -- Those people.

I think Anon 6:09am was trying to be funny and was quoting a line from Tropic Thunder.

8th and H corner is pretty quiet at night. Loitering and being drunk all day takes a lot out of you. Gotta get home. So, I guess it is creepy, but the violent crime per capita is low. Good thing you can just walk around it if you find it creepy. Nothing to really see between 7th and 10th streets anyway

the strong smell of urine at that 8th and H bus stop is proof that the drunks and druggies that hang out there need to move to another location...how about Georgetown where the people there can enjoy our local flavor.

I think everyone can agree that 8th and H is a mess. Pissy drunks, cat calling, litter, and loitering. I don't have a problem referring to those doing such as "those people." But, some people are simply waiting on the bus and should not be confused with "those people" because many are neighborhood homeowners trying to get somewhere....no hardworking American wants nastiness in their hood. I don't care what they look like. Maybe the police should stop turning a blind's eye to this stuff.

Lifestyle violations are things that harm the city growing.

The MPD can and should arrest people for D&D, Public urination, etc

Pat,

Arresting a large number of people for a nonviolent public nuisance crime like public drunkenness seems like a waste of taxpayer dollars, police resources (arresting, filing arrest report) and also does nothing to change the underlying problem: which is that some of our citizens have serious alcohol abuse and/or mental health issues.

If we put everyone who drank in public in DC Jail, the expense would be enormous. Surely we can think of some sort of public health intervention-style tactic, like the health vans that go neighborhood to neighborhood providing HIV testing and contraceptives. I'm not a sociologist, so I don't know the solution, but arresting people who drink on street corners seems like a waste of resources.

Perhaps some of the money the city takes in from licensing liquor establishments should be set aside for a dedicated alcohol treatment/public health outreach fund?

That's not to mention that if there were serious sweeps for "drunk & disorderly" on H Street, the bars would be closed in no time. LOL. I kid, but only halfway.
