Trouble at Tru Orleans

welcome, patrons

I have long seen online noise/disorderly conduct complaints about Tru Orleans from neighbors. I had even heard a bit about a recent street brawl that spilled out onto the street. I didn't cover it because I wasn't entirely sure of the facts (there was a lot of rumor there too), and I want to learn more about it before writing anything. The Washington City Paper has the facts on all the recent troubles, and news that Tru Orleans' landlord is try to evict them.

Don't miss the crazy ABRA report on the brawl, and history of violations. I mean, WOW.

The violations listed there are just the ones that ABRA referred to the DC Office of the Attorney General for prosecution. There are many more violations that ABRA has on file for which they have not yet taken action. This place is a disease and needs to go.

This place is messed up... said...

It's unfortunate. They seemed so promising when they first opened. What happened?

"It's unfortunate. They seemed so promising when they first opened. What happened?"

Capital expenditures for the build-out? Premium rent, poor margins? Lots of legal fees? Tax penalties? Money lost on alcohol sales?

I heard the food was awful too. Not a good thing if food needs to constitute a certain percentage of your sales...

this place always seemed like a front, food seemed catered for the most part, as a bar it was decent. mgt seemed weak esp when my daughter's elementary school showed up 60 deep with 3/4 yr olds for a pre-arranged luncheon. kinda epitomizes

went once. Basketball was very loud on the TV. The place was extremely bright. Looked at menu- saw jambalaya for $27 bucks. Walked out. The end.

Chronicle of a cluster foretold. I said when it opened it would suck and by golly it sure is pure suck.

I liked what they had done with the outside of the building anyway...

nice metalwork

I can't fathom how anyone would say this place was promising, ever. From the moment they opened, it pretty much immediately developed a reputation for food that was awful and service that was worse.

Let the people who manage Acadiana take it over, I say. Now *that's* Louisiana cooking over there...

I've never been in. I had high hopes but the menu prices alone, combined with the all-time terrible food reviews, led me to quickly form the opinion that it was a no-go.

The building looks great, however-- hopefully Tru will get the boot and something more desirable will step in. It's a killer location and somebody should do very well there given all the new developments.

Should be interesting to see what the next tenants do with the space. I wish the owners of Tru Orleans good luck in their next endeavors--which hopefully will be far from H Street.

Tru nuff. It was as though no one who worked there had ever *eaten* in a restaurant before, much less *worked* in one.

@12.28 The spot is tough for retail. Not many callers before 6:00 PM.

There's a certain element that dunes there....which I think is mostly the problem.

Worst food I've ever had in D.C.

My gut instinct is no, granted plenty of failed clothing/shoe places already on H Street.

That being said, I don't think FroTro is a good place to do market research.

we ate there twice. the second time only because I always try to give local places a second chance after a poor first showing. when the douche of a server messed up my order then argued that I had made the mistake, screwed up my bill AND avoided ALL eye contact to replenish the "bottomless" mimosa which was mostly ice and water, I took offense that he then added a 20%gratuity to my bill even though there were only TWO of us at the table. I've never heard of a place tacking on a gratuity for TWO people. have you?? gooooood riddance!!! btw...when I politely asked the manager about the gratuity, he was a douche too. 'nough said!

went for brunch 3 times and it was great

service was good and i like that they dress up real nice

food was excellent, 2nd best eggs Benedict in the city (that place to the right of Ted's is the best)

Brunch is o.k. but happy hour is the best bet. If other management comes to the same space, a change of tenants might not be bad but as is the place has some utility.

heyktb killed it! She is hilarious.

Some interesting comments at the WCP article about "black" versus "white" places. Sad that there is such a dichotomy on H St. I go to both places but I agree they seem to be pretty much mutually exclusive.
