National Symphony Orchestra in Our Neighborhood

Like music? Then be sure to check out the amazing local offerings from the National Symphony Orchestra this week. These events are free, and open to anyone. Please take a look:

NSO In Your Neighborhood is an exciting project each year for our musicians, because they get to perform in many different kinds of spaces around the city,” NSO Executive Director Rita Shapiro said in a statement. “The thriving arts communities in H Street NE and Capitol Hill have given us many possibilities, and we are looking forward to reaching new audiences and creating partnerships with many organizations in this vibrant part of Washington, DC.


Wednesday

OPENING CONCERT AT ATLAS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER ***
8-9:30 P.M. ATLAS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER'S LANG THEATRE, 1333 H ST., NE
The full orchestra plays a special opening concert at historic H Street corridor's Atlas Performing Arts Center, led by NSO Assistant Conductor Ankush Kumar Bahl and featuring soprano Aundi Marie Moore.

NSO musicians Glenn Donnellan, Teri Lee, and Carole Evans, violins; Mark Evans, cello; Joe Connell, percussion; Charles Nilles, bass, play a variety of classical and popular music.

Thursday

COMMUNITY PERFORMANCE: The Last Stand Quartet
6:30-8:30 P.M. ROSEDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY, 1701 GALES ST., NE
NSO musicians Joel Fuller and Alexandra Osborne, violins; Mahoko Eguchi, viola; and Rachel Young, cello, play classical works.

Friday

ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE: Viva Violins: From Baby Talk to Mozart
10-11 A.M. EBENEZERS COFFEEHOUSE, 201 F ST., NE
The violin grows up in the spotlight in this program which tells the tale of three little violins and how their mother teaches them to "sing." Join NSO violinists Elisabeth Adkins, Paula Akbar, Holly Hamilton, and Jane Bowyer Stewart as they grow the musical experience from sweet lullabies like "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" all the way to breathtaking Bach. Immediately following the performance, young people will enjoy the Musical Instrument "Petting Zoo," a project of the Women's Committee for the NSO.

COMMUNITY PERFORMANCE
6:30--7:30 P.M. SHERWOOD RECREATION CENTER, 640 10TH ST., NE
NSO musicians Aaron Goldman, flute; Eugene Mondie, clarinet; and Sue Heineman, bassoon play classical works.

ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE: The Last Stand Quartet
7-8 P.M. THE ARGONAUT, 1433 H ST., NE
NSO musicians Joel Fuller and Alexandra Osborne, violins; Mahoko Eguchi, viola; and Rachel Young, cello perform at The Argonaut, dubbed "H Street's true neighborhood gathering spot."

Saturday

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT PETTING ZOO
1:30 P.M.- 2:30 P.M. | UNION STATION, 50 MASSACHUSETTS AVE.,NE
Hands-on fun with instruments! Children (and their parents) have the chance to get up close and personal with the orchestral instruments they see professionally played on stage. The musical instrument "petting zoo" is a project of the Women's Committee for the NSO.

3 & 7 P.M. UNION STATION, EAST HALL, 50 MASSACHUSETTS AVE.,NE
Led by NSO Assistant Conductor Ankush Kumar Bahl and featuring WUSA Channel 9's Andrea Roane as host, the National Symphony performs two full "train-themed" concerts at Union Station.

GROFE: "Sunrise" from Grand Canyon Suite
LUMBYE: Copenhagen Steam Railway Galop

7:30-9:00 P.M. ATLAS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER'S LANG THEATRE, 1333 H ST., NE
NSO musicians Aaron Goldman, flute; Charles Nilles, bass; Joe Connell, percussion; and pianist Tony Nalker play jazz and chamber music.

Tickets are FREE but must be reserved ($2 per ticket service fee). Seating is limited on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve a ticket, visit atlasarts.org or contact the Atlas Box Office at (202) 399-7993 (Tue.-Sat., 12-6 p.m.).

Monday

7:30-9 P.M. CAPITOL HILL SDA CHURCH, 914 MASSACHUSETTS AVE., NE NSO musicians Natasha Bogachek and Zino Bogachek, violins; and Eric deWaardt, viola play classical works.

FYI last night's performance at Rhe Atlas was excellent. Nice mix of classical and more contemporary selections. Packed house and FREE!

I really enjoyed the performance last night. It featured an interesting range of music from stuff I was not a huge fan of to some that gave me chills. Definitely inspired me to go see the NSO at the Kennedy Center. Thanks to Atlas for getting this together for the neighborhood.
