Want to Work on the Streetcar?

The first step is to attend this DC Streetcar Job Fair.

Applicants are welcome to attend the January 27 Job Fair, or they can apply via e-mail.
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT), the DC Streetcar operator, RDMT, and Midtown Personnel will host a job fair on Monday, January 27th from 10am-2pm at the Department of Employment Services (DOES) headquarters, located at 4058 Minnesota Ave NE, Washington, DC, 20019.

At this time, RDMT is hiring individuals for four positions:
Maintenance Technicians
Material Handlers
Service Attendants
Streetcar Operators
Complete job descriptions can be accessed at www.dcstreetcar.com/connect/employment. Interested individuals do not have to attend the job fair to be considered. They may submit resumes directly to Molly O’Reilly-Pol at Midtown Personnel, 202.887.4747 or molly@themidtowngroup.com.

The Metrorail and Metrobus are both excellent ways to get around the District and the entire DC area. The Minnesota Avenue Metro, on the Orange Line, is the closest metro station.

Buses running nearby include the U2, U5, U6, U8, V7, X1, X2, X3 and X9.  Visit www.wmata.com to plan your trip.

A credit check sounds appropriate too. I know the bus drivers on the X2 don't charge riders who board on the other side of the river, and as soon as they cross over west of the river, the fare card readers start working. It's stealing from the city and it's racist....

Why do we even let them cross the river ?

Will the X2 still run and make stops along the trolley route?

part of it is the drivers get a lot of heat from management for being behind schedule but they
never get heat for the farebox being less then optimal.

the drivers take the attitude they will do what management tells them to.

Plus, a lot of the people boarding don't have the cash anyways so the drivers give them a lift.

Yeah. That's not what's going on. The driver physically puts his hand over the fare card reader to stop people from paying, until he gets over the river and then makes passengers pay. It's racism, clear and simple.

It sounds like you regularly take a free ride on the X2. Could it be that you are trolling, or could it be ...?

I pick up the X2 at 11th and H NE every weekday morning and sometimes the driver has his/her hand over the meter, so it's not just east of the river that they do that.

Agreed. I've seen drivers do this all over the city. It could be that over the river, people are less likely to be able to pay, so drivers do it more there. but i agree with Pat. it has more to do with avoiding delays...

Inked, why is 5:28 trolling? This is something that happens. You obviously don't know the city as well as you think you do.

It was more that 5:28 suggested that it only happens east of the river. Drivers do this all the time throughout the X2's route. The comment struck me as less than genuine.

Actually, when the driver puts his hand on the meter, its because it is broken. How do I know? I asked.
Inked is right, it happens throughout the city. The issue is more of management.
BTW, those commentators who suggested it is racist are trolling and have actually made a racist comment just by saying that.

@anonymous @5:28

What on earth does having good (or bad) credit have to do with your allegation? Nothing. A bus driver with good or bad credit could still do what you're alleging, which by the way sounds like a dubious allegation which you couldn't prove without personally riding every bus line that crosses the Anacostia. You sound like a troll to me.

Also, there are white people who live east of the river and black people who live west of the river, not to mention that the vast majority of the X2's route is west of the river and I see X2 drivers put their hand over the card reader west of the river all the time. You're totally trolling.

So let's get some video of the hand over the fare card reader phenomenon and pass it to the usual news outlets including WMATA management.

I've seen the hand thing when the part of the machine that takes bills is broken, but the card reader still takes SmartTrip. Typically the driver will say "SmartTrip only" when that happens, so those who have a card pay, & those who do not offer one ride for free. I'm sure some drivers let all passengers ride for free when this happens.

...and there are white bus drivers too.

"...and there are white bus drivers too."

X2 drivers? Maybe one. Citywide maybe five or six.

I rarely take the bus in the city. However on an occasion here and there (via X2), the driver has offered a free ride. I think its more of keeping the tires rolling a safety measure to keep riders settled...And yes, I'm white. So, quit playing the race card.

Jesus Christ. you people are all, every one of you, on each side of this petty little debate, making the people in the batter bowl thread look like paragons of earnest debate on matters of the highest importance in our civic experiment. I.e., you should all drink strychnine.
