The African American Civil War Museum & Historical Society of Washington, DC present The Loving Story by Nancy Buirski as part of the Created Equal program.  The Loving Story is a documentary that tells the story of Mildred & Richard Loving, & the Supreme Court case that brought an end to anti-miscegenation laws in the United States. Did you know that the Lovings stayed with relatives in a house right here in Trinidad (1151 Neal Street) during part of the eight year long court battle?

Join us for the film followed by a discussion with Ayo Handy-Kendi of PositivEngergyWorks, LLC and Dr. Joy Kinard of the National Park Service in the museum's auditorium.

The conversation will illuminate how the 1967 supreme court miscegenation laws affected the Loving family, and families across the nation. "The freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men" was stated by Chief Justice Warren. This ruling was a reflection of the direction of the civil rights movement.

Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities part of its Bridging Cultures initiative in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
