Last Night's Violent Mugging at 12th & K

IMG_1623
Sorry about the old photo, but this is where the mugging took place

If you saw my tweets/retweets last night, you know that something bad went down at 12th & K Street a little after 10pm. A few minutes after I asked, MPD tweeted about a robbery at that location.

Then this morning PoPville had a post up with a reader describing what had happened (the original post misidentified the quadrant as NW). It sounds like a violent mugging during which a woman was approached by a stanger who punched her very hard in the face. More details from a reader below:

I live...on K St.,..down from 12th. It was after 10pm, and the bf and I were hanging out, watching TV, when we heard screaming and ran outside to find a woman laying on the sidewalk, screaming, and a couple of women getting out of a car rushing towards her. We got her an ice pack and some water, while we waited for the police to show up. From the limited first aid experience I've had, I'd say she was in shock (understandably.) Her eye was swollen shut, and she was bleeding on her face.

She was waiting for the bus...[when] a guy, came up and punched her in the face and took her purse and phone. There was a car at the intersection that started honking and actually tried to chase the guy, but he cut through the alley...so they stopped and got out to come back and help the woman. The police arrived pretty quickly, and within a few minutes they were searching the area, and picked up a suspect on H St.

Fortunately he tossed her phone nearby, so she got that back, and with the security camera footage from [a nearby] house they were able to positively ID a guy they picked up minutes after, but it's still pretty scary. The woman was in bad enough shape to have to go to the hospital...
...
Anyway, I guess my takeaway here is that the summer season of muggings and crime is starting early...

Please keep this woman in your thoughts, and be careful out there. Huge shout out to everyone who stepped up to help this woman, and to MPD & EMS for their swift response.

one of these days these pieces of trash who rob people are gonna rob the wrong person, and it is really going to make my day.

Part of living in a city is to deal with crime. As citizen continue to be apathetic this stuff will continue. Threatening to shoot a criminal or wishing to have a vigilante moment is simple thinking. The lady is hurt, but not sure why she and not the countless others is getting press. I'm not sure this is really news, but I sure hope she is okay.

yes, it is the most basic of thinking to care about the protection of one's own self.

Robby's persistence in believing that he is the arbiter of newsworthiness on a neighborhood blog is sort of awesome. Seems like it could be the basis for a sketch on Portlandia.

inked i hope you take 1012's comment down since it is a "personal attack". that holds true for all right, not just "attacks" on your friends?

11:20,
I don't read that as an attack.

we should be happy that people got involved calling 911, helping the victim and even following the suspect.

We should wish the victim best towards recovery and hope that she is able to see some modicum of justice.

11:20 -- Do you have nothing better to do than to troll a neighborhood blog? Get a life.

Late to comment on this but I saw the story on TV on Wednesday. Did they catch the perp? I only ask because in October of last year my wife an I witnessed a similar attack not far from there while enjoying a cigarette on our stoop. A woman was knocked to the ground and was being viciously beaten. My wife called police and I took off at the kid screaming for him to get off of her and he bolted. I chased him down an alley to the next block but lost him. I feel lucky I was barefoot because if I had caught up with him I might've ended up in jail I was so furious I'd've probably beat the kid to death.

These types of crimes will only stop when people stop ignoring them and directly confront the low-life scoundrels that think they can act with impunity. Violence begets violence - and I look forward to the day when I read or hear about some little punk getting his due by his would-be victims and those willing to stand up to criminality.

What does the neighborhood think if the MPD did just a few summary executions in cases like this? Ya know, you positively ID the perp and you just take him around back, blast him in the alley, and then leave his body for a day or two as a message. Violent criminals respond to, and respect, shows of strength. Obviously, this would never happen in the US, but I truly believe if the MPD did this just two or three times, we would have a crime free summer.

i encourage you for calling the MPD and shouting at the perp, but violence from you isn't much better.
Far better to chase the perp, and keep them in sight and let MPD bust them.

I would love for one of these little thugs to try and mug me. They'll get 2 in the chest and one in the head. Self defense, yo.

it's best to avoid violence, but if you can't avoid it, be decisive.
