Murry's Closing On June 11th

DSC_0793

Longtime neighborhood grocery store Murry's (610 H St) is shutting its doors on June 11th.

Inked spoke with a Murry's employee who informed her that Murry's employees have the option of joining the staff at Whole Foods, so at least the potential job losses related to this change appear to be mitigated. The employee to whom Inked spoke planned on working at the Whole Foods at 1440 P St NW  and hoped to transfer back to the H Street location, once that store opens in late 2016. I suppose we should expect demolition of the Murry's site this summer. What are your thoughts on all this? Any distraught Murry's fans out there?

Really happy that Whole Foods is offering jobs to the current employees. This project is going to be a huge boom to the community and this part of H street. Glad to see it start.

the space was a People's Drugstore when I first moved to the neighborhood in 1997. it closed and the space sat empty for a while. There was a smaller Murry's further up on H Street in the 1100 block I believe. We were so excited when this one opened because there was previously nowhere to get fresh produce anywhere. Glad to see it go - note that the new Giant carries Murry's "meat" products.

I can’t wait for Whole Foods to come to the neighborhood. This is great news for the area. That middle section of H really needs something like that to make the strip more vibrant. It will be great to see those Rappaport guys stepping up their game and doing something about the H Street Connection as well. It is very discouraging to walk by it at any time of the day with so many people just loitering, drinking and littering. In other news, I am a bit concerned about the streetcar. Does anyone have any insight as to how this budget cut would impact the future of the streetcar? http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/mike-debonis/wp/2014/05/28/why-streetcar-cuts-arent-facing-much-of-a-fight/

Yes, H Street Connection has been very disappointing so far. They were the first to announce development plans and are behind everyone else now. Does anyone know if Jair Lynch project is condos or rentals?

OT, but anyone have info on the project across from Giant by the bridge? It's huge and coming along quickly, but I haven't heard anything about what it's going to be.

Couldn't agree more on H Street Connection/Rappaport. Does anyone know what is the hold up? That strip mall is now the worst eyesore around and a terrible waste of prime real estate.

Even though it's heyday has passed I'll miss Murrays- 10+ years ago they were the only grocery store around. and their produce (what little there was) was in ok condition and cheap.

Really glad to see that Whole Foods was offering to retain the employees! I definitely recall voicing a concern about that. The development is important but so is preventing job loss!

More details about the development on the south side of the 200 block of H here: http://www.mack-cali.com/press-releases/mack-cali-and-fisher-brothers-form-joint-venture-to-acquire-377-unit-multi-family-residential-development-project-in-d.c./2376

"The 377-unit project includes approximately 25,000 square feet of retail space and a 309-space underground parking garage. ... It is expected that the project will be completed by mid-2015,

...Units will feature high-end finishes including hardwood flooring throughout, two-toned custom European cabinetry with stone countertops, stainless steel appliances, and custom vanities and sinks with ceramic tile and modern fixtures. The property will offer residents an impressive amenity package including a fitness center with yoga and spin studios, a clubroom with gaming, a demonstration kitchen, terrariums, and technology centers. The outdoor amenities include three rooftop decks, with a 100-foot pool and hot tub, grilling stations and cabanas, a rooftop garden with an eco-pond and gardening plots for residents, a dog run, two landscaped gardens in courtyards, and an outdoor projection screening area."

Thank god they will have two-toned European cabinetry. I wouldn't want the residents to have to live with one-toned South American cabinets.

i hope some of the employees at Giant get replaced. how do some of those people get hired? Murray's people are always good. Giant needs to get rid some of their people.

FWIW

I was on a walk down the street in April and I stuck my head in the H St Self store and the manager said
"This is our official last month, we are contacting renters and trying to get them out of here starting in May. We are taking no new contracts and it's clean out time". I asked if there would be a unit auction and he didn't know at the time.
