Soft Opening For Po Boy Jim Continues Saturday June 28, 5pm-1am

Po Boy Jim

Po Boy Jim (709 H St) continues its soft opening period today (Saturday June 28th), 5pm-1am. Stop in for some awesome po' boys (a delightful staple sandwich in New Orleans) and cool beverages at their bar (alcohol is also popular in New Orleans...ha!).

This spot has been in development for some time. Longtime FT readers will recall that we initially covered this restaurant when they began their renovations in 2012. And it looks like all the time they put into it has paid off because the space looks beautiful, as you can tell in the picture below.

Is there a website? I'd love to look at their menu.

Just curious, has anyone had one yet? What did you think, and how big were they? Maybe it's just the photo, but that first photo in the District Cuisine review makes their po' boys look pretty small -- like a quarter po' boy or even smaller -- but the prices are significantly more than you'd pay for a half po' boy in NOLA.

Of course it costs more than New Orleans. Come on. I ate there Friday night and while it's not Parkway quality the po boys were quite good. They don't dress them in a traditional manner but the seafood was good and the batter had flavor, plus they are using Leidenhemer bread I believe.

I had the catfish and my wife had the soft shell crab. Both were quite good and fairly large. Note the prices also include fries ... fries weren't very good though.

Servers were very nice and they still have some opening kinks to work out but overall I'm impressed. Signed, Mr. Canal and Carrollton.

I'm also from New Orleans. I stopped in shortly after I posted about the soft opening and had the shrimp po' boy. I enjoyed it well enough (obviously it can't compete with po' boys made *in* New Orleans, but I'm clearly biased as far as that goes). Servers were very friendly and they had Abita on tap. I'll be back, for sure.

I couldn't locate a website for them, but I updated this post with a link to their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Po-Boy-Jim/115413258608475

There is a menu on their Facebook page. Direct links to the photos they posted of their menus are below:

I went Sunday night. The po boys were large, bigger serving sizes than a lot of restaurants in the area. I liked the fries. Seemed like it was priced right for the portion size and neighborhood. The people were also very welcoming. They mentioned that the menu will be expanding soon to include entrees and desserts. Right now it's just sandwiches and appetizers. I love having a place I can get Abita Amber on tap. When they expand the menu, it would be great if they can add a healthy option. Maybe a grilled shrimp salad.

Island Dyes appears to be open. Anyone go inside yet?

Four of us went there last night.

The staff are very friendly and attentive, which was awesome.

They're just serving the po boys right as part of the soft opening, but they're going to have more stuff. I had the "Po Boy Jim on H", which was a sinful combination of roast beef, bacon, and shrimp. It was very tasty. The fries are very crispy and satisfying.

I thought the batter on the shrimp had fantastic flavor. I'll probably just get the shrimp next time.

I've had plenty of po boys in New Orleans. These are the real thing, better than many down there, but probably not better than the best. But who really expects that?

This is a delightful addition to H St. I live three blocks away, so I'm probably looking at an increased waistline. :-)

Having Abita on tap was fun. Now they just need to get Dixie!

I always enjoy Alan's posts which are factual and include addresses. There is hi hidden agenda or nasty gossipy neighborhood drama. Thanks for your contributions Alan.

@h st ii: yeah, I know, but even at DC/H Street markups, it looked like ~double the typical cost in New Orleans and that kinda surprised me. But Anon 9:28 said that the sandwiches weren't small at all, so I probably misinterpreted the photo. And from everyone's posts here including yours, the sandwiches themselves sound damn good, so I'll pick one up as soon as I can. I miss a good po' boy. I wonder if there's any chance they'll make muffulettas too!

What is bbq shrimp? Shrimp with bbq sauce? I like shrimp. Sometimes prefer it not fried. But putting bbq sauce on it doesnt sound very good

I was excited when Po Boy Jim's finally opened. I checked them out recently, and I was underwhelmed. First the positives. Awesome space and the staff were very, very warm and welcoming. My complaints are with the food--not so much the taste, but with what you get. The Po Boys are only 8 inches, yet most are over $10! I understand it is seafood (except for the curious roast beef, which one would think would cost less than most of their seafood offerings, but no--maybe someone from NOLA can explain that to me). I had the BBQ shrimp. Again, it tasted very good, but aside from the 8" bread, the serving itself was on the small side for the price (over $13 with tax!) Also, the french fries were HORRIBLE. Soggy and just drenched in grease. I would like to try Po Boy Jim's again, but since the price point is so high, I just don't want to risk it again. I hope they step up their servings, or knock the prices down around $2. Also, huge missed opportunity with the horrible beer selection. It 's on H st! You cannot offer just Abita, and think Coors and Bud will cut it and expect to make money at the bar.

The fried shrimp po boy is awesome! Now I understand the delay in construction...Upstairs is huge with a great bar! Friendly owners. Will be back with a crowd of people for sure.

Went last night. They have a bigger beer selection than the earlier commenter stated (perhaps they are slowly rolling them out?) and also cocktails. Plus they were doing a happy hour so prices were knocked down on alcohol several bucks.

Food was good, but my fiance wished there was more shrimp in the po'boy, like there would be in New Orleans. The upstairs bar is a nice place to be; I think we'll be back for drinks and appetizers, but not necessarily the po boys.

Here is a question - If you say you want your Po-boy dressed will they know what you mean? ;)
