H Street's newest addition, a Peruvian restaurant called Ocopa (1324 H Street), opens its doors tonight at 5:30pm. Ocopa serves a varied menu that includes pollo a la brasa, ceviche, Peruvian style maki, and much more. They offer a number of specialty cocktails, including pisco sours. They also make their own sodas. You can read more about their offerings in this piece from Young & Hungry (they also have a copy of the menu). There are only 28 seats, so be prepared for a wait. Alternately, you could make a reservation.

It's high-end modern Peruvian cuisine. Was there for the soft opening and the menu is ambitious, and mostly very good. Don't think of other Latin American cuisine if you have not had Peruvian food--it is unique and different, and it's going to be a learning process for a lot of people who have never been down there.

The owners said they'll offer the Rotisserie Chicken during the day, but only the more sophisticated stuff in the evenings. That's the stuff you want to try out. They're growing their herbs under lights in the basement [insert obvious joke here].

i like my gentrification rrrrrrrrrapid. exciting news.

Who gives a shit about the other food. If they wanna make money they need to have the chicken all the time. That's what people like.

I give a shit about the other food. I'll be happy if the rotisserie chicken is good, sure; but I can get that at a zillion places. If they're doing stuff I *can't* get at a zillion places, and it's good, I'll be happy.

Ummm...no. People really just want the chicken. And they don't want to have to travel to Maryland to get it.

Your confidence in your narrow-minded view that chicken rotisserie is the only Peruvian food people ever want to eat is astounding. Maybe you should move out to Maryland to live next to your rotisserie chicken favorite.

umm, it ain't the only peruvian I want to eat, but it's the peruvian I'll consistently spend the most money on. Kinda like how Gisele ain't the only brazilian model in my search history, but she's certainly the auto fill, dig? If business models met your expectations, I imagine HR-whatever it is wouldn't be moving on. In other words, GIVE ME CHICKEN.

super expensive for tiny portions, cool

It doesn't matter if you want other Peruvian food. Great. Have at it. But if they don't consistently have that chicken, they're going to be missing out on a lot of business.

rotisserie chicken lovers: i wish you all knew how narrow minded you sound. a cuisine is not just 1 fucking dish. morons.

something amazing just happened. I decided to not spend money there tonight, because I'm in the mood for chicken!

I went there for dinner earlier in the week. It was an overall delightful experience, very nice decor (definitely check out the bathrooms whose doors could withstand an assault from SWAT), a good selection of items (although true vegetarians and vegans only have a few choices), the food I ordered (mostly seafood) was incredibly fresh and tasty, and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The wait for cocktails was absurdly long, however (about 20 minutes), and the portions of some dishes were a bit small for the price. The menu was also a little hard to navigate without assistance from the staff, although they were more than happy to help. I would definitely go back as the food was really quite good, but the current price to portion ratio makes it a special occasion place in my book.

Rotisserie chicken-only eater of August 6 11:55pm, you made me laugh. I guess I dig what you say, but I'm gonna dig my heels in too and say, that if Ocopa starts to offer a special side business to chicken rotisserie take-out eaters - i.e. chicken rotisserie available all day because people like you don't eat much else - then Ocopa had better keep it on the down-low and sell it in a discreet, tasteful kind of way, because it's just too cliche… Sorry but it is….

Yes...people purchasing and eating chicken....definitely cliche.

Went the other night, and I'll echo some of the others' comments: small portions for high prices. I'll pass for now, then try again after some time has passed.
