looks like a nice place

While it looks nice I'm not sure this place is going to last for long. How on earth can you have a sports bar that's not open for dinner? I was so excited to have a place a few blocks away to go to watch a game but who in their right mind thought it was a good model to close a sports bar and grill for the meal where 80% of your customers will want to be dining? Hope it's a success and hope they move towards reasonable hours but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Ben, it's in "soft opening" mode. I'm sure they'll open for dinner soon. They would be insane not to.

I think they're still waiting on a liquor license, so soft opening when sports watchers aren't expecting to drink makes sense.

This looks like a breakfast/lunch diner with a misleading name. I for one would be happy to have a breakfast focused place that is not carry out, opens before 11 am, and is not focused on boozy brunch's (god knows we have enough of those to choose from).

I hope "cold slaw" on the menu is intentional and they don't actually think that's what it's called.

Also, I'll wait until I try them to pass any serious judgement but I can't get over what a boring, lifeless name they gave this place.

I hope it's only part of the Soft Opening, but the Hill Now article I saw on it made it seem like it would be without dinner for a good 3-6 months and they might consider expanding at that point. I think I've just lost my good faith personal investment capital in the streetcar debacle and can't hope anymore.

Sometimes the one-off amateurish family places are the best. With that said:

I'm afraid the whole thing seems off-- the name is so hamfisted it doesn't even allow people to discuss the place. "Hey, want to go to Sixth & H Bar and Grill tonight" is a sentence that nobody will ever say. Also, The Menu Has At Least Ten (10) Strange Formatting And Description Conventions.

i wonder why this site didnt cover the bens chilli bowl opening this week with a lot of notable african american people in attendance, media, long lines and ballons. Oh i forgot this blog only covers african americans when they are the suspects of an alleged crime on h st.

11:44,
That's demonstrably untrue. Just dig into the archives a bit. Plus, I did write about the Ben's opening, but I wasn't there because I was at work. If someone sends me photos from the opening I'll happily post them just the same as I did with these. I'm hoping to make it to Ben's soon, but I haven't had the chance. Ditto with Copycat Co (and I LOVE dumplings). I am hoping to have something up soon about Addis. It's gotten harder to keep up with the pace of new spots on H Street, but I suppose that's not exactly a bad problem to have.

Some of you are just soooooo special, aren't you?

Anyway, I walked by the other day pre-opening and was invited inside a few minutes. Very welcoming place and really good people. A rare and refreshingly genuine, gimmick-free neighborhood joint to serve as partial antidote for everything else happening on H.

it's a small sports bar. what hip name do you have in mind so that it's qualified to be discussed about? please inform us, i can't wait to discuss about the balance of the mozzarella and the breaded exterior. perhaps after given a hip name, I could engage with my neighbors about whether the bacon in the turkey club completely neutralizes the turkey? perhaps the lettuce rescues this conflict in this very innovative dish? what is the chef trying to communicate with me?

Nobody is talking about needing a "hip" name-- a place should just be called something that is recognizable. Like "Ben's", "Toki", "The Pug", "McDonald's" etc. etc. They are doing themselves a disservice by not really giving themselves a name that people can refer to.

Friend 1: Let's meet at 6 & H Bar and Grill
Friend 2: Which bar and grill?
Friend 1: 6th & H.
Friend 2: No, what's it called?

It's just confusing and sort of dumb.

yes there needs to be a name to be recognizable from the other bar/grills at 6th and H

Anonymous said...

Ok you win. Restaurants don't need names.

thanks. I'll buy you a beer sometime at 6h and H Bar and Grill. or maybe if I am on the west end at the H Street Country Club

Just to add to the list! A new Faux Deli opened at 3rd and F NE.
The counter "temp laborers, independent contractors" ...help ?
told me this place was designed to look like the " Ubiquitous Corner Store of Old"
but it is really just a distribution center for products made at the Union Kitchen.
Just a lot of over priced hipster BS

@Anon 6:33 - I am glad that the deli or corner store opened up at the old Adams Market space. It is a 1,000% better than what was there before. I stopped shopping at the Adams Market years before they closed for various reasons. Now, I stop in to get a few things. So, big deal if they are a distribution for Union Kitchen. They sell local products.
They have also greatly improved the the building front and surrounds too. The previous owners didn't do much at all.

As far as the "6th St. Bar", It means more noise and trash issues. I am curious to know what the direct neighbors feel about it. The place I am sure will do just fine. Especially when the Jair Property is finished and occupied.

Where are they storing their trash?

Derek said...

Good question. That was my concern when I lived on that street back in 2010 and whats-his-name told me that he wanted to open a sports bar that will serve lunch. I watch them install the air-handling unit on the roof during a Saturday. Without a permit I believe, but I never dug into the permit to see.

Anonymous said...

good point about the trash, I'd rather have it be out front like how the burger place does it. I can't see how noise would be a problem. it's smaller than the burger place

Derek said...

That portion of the street has families (at least when I lived there) and was fairly quiet. Over the past several years (including when I lived there and after I moved to another section of H St) more and more foot traffic went along 6th Street and late night loud talking and screaming. Even with my windows shut it got loud. I know that the neighbors next to Tru Orleans had constant noise issues. How is the new place now? Good I hope.

I know that The Big Board takes very good care of the trash area to be on as-good-terms-as possible the neighbors since that is the only location for the trash.

@Derek,
I guess we should all worry about where the trash will be instead of how those families you mention that are very concerned with noise will be handing having 670 apartments at that intersection (430 in the Apollo and 240 on the south side of the street in the H St Condominiums). That population increase will, to me, far exceed opportunity for noise than that which will be generated by the bar that seats maybe 5% of that population.

Disclaimer: I don't live anywhere near there but might appreciate a neighborhood sports bar to trek to from time to time. No bone in this fight but do see that there are so many other factors impacting that area that focus on foot traffic from the far will pale in comparison. A lot changes in 5 years.

Derek said...

@Anon - I agree.
However, there are a good number of places to drink, eat and hang out at all along H Street. The Big Board, just two blocks away at 4th Street has plenty of TVs and if there is a game you are there to see, they will put it on for you.
Either way, it's about time something useful is being done with that place.
