H Street Coffee House & Cafe Has Closed Its Doors

DSC_0005

Anyone Looking to grab a cup of joe at H Street Coffee House & Cafe (1359 H Street) in recent weeks has encountered a sign bearing the message that appears below. The sign's been up since at least August 21st.

Thank you to all of our customers for your business and support over the past four years. We have closed our coffee shop as of today and will reopen after some renovations in 2016.
Please email hstreetcoffeehouse[at]gmail.com

I sent an inquiry asking for any additional information about future plans, and here's what I got back.

We are considering other options for the H street coffee.  Unfortunately with H streets limited morning traffic it was tough to keep the shop afloat.  With 4 shops that serve coffee in the morning on our block there's just not enough to justify it's existence. We will keep you posted as the details of the spot evolve.

Isn't this place owned/connected to Biergarten Haus in some way? Authentic German pastries would have been way better than Costco croissants and pre-packaged breakfast meals. I honestly can't say I've been in there for breakfast in the past two years because I also have a Costco membership and started recognizing items. They really missed the mark when they opened and created a nice void for Bullfrog Bagels and Maketto to fill in. Hopefully they can figure it out and the space won't stay vacant for too long...

The coffee wasnt the greatest.
Its hard to justify their price when Maketto had better coffee, Bullfrog had better coffee and not to mention its 5 minutes on my bike to hit Union Market Peregrine.
The place wasnt up to the standard of the city, easy to blame "competition" when you have a crappy product.

yeah, place seemed generic to me, and i never stepped foot in the place. the name alone was boring.

It is nice to hear people talk of taste, standards, and quality!

It will not be missed for reasons already noted above. The previous concept (coffee bar in the am; wine bar in the evening) seemed better. I'm sure they will just use the space for yet more beer garden space like they did with the old wine bar space. There were a lot of missed opportunities there.

They also had a network set up that kicked people off the wi-fi after 30 minutes. Say what you will about Maketto, but that place is friend to the teleworker.

When people would used the coffee house bathroom, it would stink up the whole place.

Competition? There isn't a Starbucks within a mile of that place (excluding the one inside the Safeway).

Really Starbucks?!?? WTF? You are a fucking moron.

Starbucks? Really? Never heard of Maketto?

I second the "nice to hear about standards and quality" post above. Also glad that the Starbucks poster is being given the WTF treatment...:)

The Starbucks drinker probably wants a TGI Fridays or that "good" seafood place, what is it call, Red Lobster.
They should just move to Arlington, into a soulless condo. Go get your Pumpkin Spice shit and die.

Is Chinitos closed now too?

9:40,
I've reached out to Chinito's to see what's going on, but I haven't gotten a response yet.

Arlington does have a lot of chain businesses, but they have lot of small independent stuff to choose from. plus, you can go to an establishment and not worry about being: robbed to/from/ and within the business, shot w/out reason, sexually assaulted, thrown glass in your face, etc. it is slightly more expensive, but if the safety of the neighborhood doesn't improve, and home prices go up, I am heading there. what's wrong w/ being surrounded by young, educated, professionals with decency and manners anyways?

I been in the neighborhood since 2005. I came with youth, a multi-cultural perspective, and anger at the housing market. I am now in my 30's disgruntled at the police, elected leaders, and the locals. Stop bashing upper middle class people like you didn't grow up in an upper middle class household.

@12:30

I didnt. I grew up in a borderline lower lower middle class. So go fuck yourself. Fuck you.
If you want some PSL shit, great go do it.

It sounds like you have some shit happen.

Im sorry and that sucks.

But you are fucking douche and should move.

Please try to keep it civil. I understand that people may have strong feelings about some of these issues, but we're all members of what I hope we all want to be a safe and comfortable community. That in it itself provides a fair bit of common ground even if you can't come to terms over the suburbs or pumpkin spice flavored drinks.

Why cant you have both quality and safety? I am not naive to increase safety and quality does drive up the cost of living in the area and pushes out the poorer folks. I don't want to live with poor folks who have to choose between the upkeep of their car, property and self over just eating and paying rent. Those choices make it uncomfortable to live next to those who are struggling to survive. However those of us who have choices can still work towards good coffee and food and safety?

I liked that place but, with rents the way they are it's tough
