 Text from the meeting notice:

We need your input regarding a future development project! Neighborhood Development Co. and its affiliates are planning to develop approximately 75 affordable housing units at 1164 Bladensburg Road, NE on the corner of Meigs Place and Bladensburg Road NE. The building is currently boarded up and serves little purpose to the surrounding community. This newly proposed development will help spur further development along Bladensburg which will help bring more retail and more general business to this part of Trinidad DC.

Thanks for spreading the word! For our hearing-impaired neighbors, please note that ASL interpretation is being provided at this meeting, courtesy of the developer.

Nice to see more ASL being offered at events in our neighborhood.

It is not the taxpayers and workers burden to pay to subsidize housing for the poor. The problem of violent crime in this neighborhood has always been due to the poor. Those who want affordable housing need to move in search of it. We cant build a new affordable ghetto and think the residents lives will magically turn into middle class over night. If I own property and can rent it for a criminal amount it is because people pay, and it is not the job of the government to provide homes for those who wont work for them.

anon - the thing about "subsidized housing for the poor" in dc, is that it is often just a red herring for developers to get easier approval for developments. many of these projects end up having only a few units that might even remotely be considered "affordable to those who can't". this is why it's important to attend meetings like this. to figure out what the heck is going on.....

This strip of road doesn't NEED more affordable housing. There's the MASSIVE Carver-Langston projects not a few blocks away. It needs solid, good development that will attract better businesses and better neighbors to the neighborhood.

This area is flooded with affordable housing already, and the crime-riddled element that it attracts.

I am down with affordable housing for artists, but we should stop rewarding unproductive artists and people who traditionally flock to affordable housing, welfare, chicken wings, etc.

I am a 10+ year resident and have been reading this blog for year and yet to respond, but I have to say it is remarkable how these racists hide behind the computer screen and make these RACISTS comments.....#showyourface

there's nothing racist on this thread. just cause we're possibly making disparaging remarks about a lower economic class doesn't make it racist.

The people you just referring is not only people who relying on welfare, affordable housing... College students need a damn affordable housing as well!

Affordable Housing doesn't attract the crime... It is unemployment or underemployment. Social service is badly needed. Recheck your evaluation on the well-being of the community... Across the colour of races, education, and many factors...

Affordable housing is okay. Just not subsidized housing. It's the single welfare mothers and their children that are the problem. Race hasn't got anything to do with it. There are plenty of civilized black people with decent upbringings in this area that I would love to attract to the neighborhood. They don't want to live next to the hoodrat spawn of some crackhead teenage mother any more than the rest of us do though.

NO SECTION 8, we have enough around here already. If you are unemployed you've got no business living in the city away. There is a lot cheaper real estate where you get sit around and watch TV and get high all day.

If you're complaining about this project, you should take a look at the HBO series "Show Me a Hero"
