On the evening of 5 December (eve of the Feast of St. Nicholas), a beast-like creature roams the streets frightening children with rusty chains and bells. According to Alpine lore, St. Nicholas is accompanied by several helpful attendants, one of which is the horned satyr known as Krampus. Whereas St. Nicholas rewards well-behaved children with gifts, Krampus is said to capture particularly naughty children in his sack and carry them away to his lair for punishment.
The 4th Annual DC Krampuslauf takes place Saturday December 5th, and you won't want to miss it. This is your chance to enjoy a different kind of holiday celebration and raise funds for Santa's Cause D.C., a local charity that supports DC foster kid. Krampusnacht DC hosts their the 4th Annual Krampuslauf, paying homage to "Krampus" -- Santa's Counterpart from European lore that punishes the naughty children while Santa takes care of the nice.
The night begins at 6pm at Gallery O on H (1354 H Street) with a family friendly reception that includes children's activities, photos with Krampus and Santa Claus and live performances by fire artists Dance Afire and the Foggy Bottom Morris Men. Following the reception, St. Nicholas leads the ‘Krampuslauf’ procession of Krampus costumed celebrants on a charity walk down H Street. Participants then will reconvene at Gallery O on H for an after party with a dj and refreshments. There is no cover for the event, but a $10 suggested donation or unwrapped Christmas gift is requested. The reception and walk are open to all ages, but the after party is 21+ and begins at 9pm. Costumes or any reasonable attempt is highly encouraged. Santa's Cause DC is a special project for Family Matters of Greater Washington, which strives to enhance the lives of foster children throughout the DC area.
