Market Terminal Development Headed to Union Market

The Washington Business Journal and Urban Turf have details on the massive new Market Terminal development Kettler aims to land in the 300 block of Morse Street in the Florida Avenue Market. That block of Morse actually runs perpendicular to the other blocks of Morse Street in the Market. It's a section of the Market that is almost entirely devoted to wholesale operations (many of those businesses also sell retail, and there's a Korean restaurant and a Latin American bakery over there too). Plans call for razing the one story warehouses and replacing them (and the massive parking lot they encircle) with a two-phase mixed-use project with residential (nearly 1,000 units!), office, and retail space. Yes! High priced condos! I hate diverse small businesses with economical price points that can't be found anywhere else in the city!!

This development sounds awesome but when will this mayor start focusing on encouraging small local businesses? Affordable housing is always the mantra but how about some sort of small business mentoring or at least fixing the screwed up DC processes for starting a small business. Neighborhoods (all of them and especially lower income ones) need small, locally run businesses. A development like this could be a great opportunity to showcase local DC entrepreneurs.
