A Little Something I Wrote for the WCP

CTfU-c8VEAA59BP
Commissioners Lee & Henderson argue procedure at the 11/10/15 meeting

For those of you who may have missed it, I wrote a cover story for the Washington City Paper. It's about Kathy Henderson and ANC 5D. You can comment over on the WCP site, or in a Reddit thread on the story. If you leave a comment here please keep it clean and be civil.

An excellent article.

WoW at what point did the African American narrative change from fight police violence and a fix broken system to Screw All of You and Your White Supremacist System?

I'd say, H St and Bladensburg need to go through the transition of hip restaurant district to in vogue residential area.

Giving new businesses a hard time isn't going to make the area better

Pat,

You are correct that the antagonistic behavior towards business is hurting development on Bladensburg. If we want to get the change we want in 5D05 we all need to start complaining about how she has stunted development on Benning Road as well. Only complaining about how she hurts Bladensburg plays in to her one strong point. She can easily distort your message to her supporters to convince them that 5D02, 5D03, 5D06, and 5D07 (who are adjacent to Bladensburg) are ganging up on her. I live in the community and this is what happens and it works on people who do not attend the meetings but remember when Kathy was a true advocate for them when things were much crazier over here. These are the people we need to reach. The reality is, I know you all care about making Benning Rd nicer too. We need to make all of ANC 5D great. Don't forget to make this clear in your rhetoric going forward so that she can no longer play this card. We have just shy of 10 months left to get the narrative out that getting rid of her will benefit 5D05 and the ANC as a whole because we will see real improvements to quality of life on Benning and Bladensburg.

Elise,

Great article! This will be a game changer for our community. Keep up the good work.

PS You should frame the cover and put it up on the wall.

Well said, 8:02.
We also need qualified, articulate, motivated people that care about the community to run against her in the next election. Interest needs to happen sooner rather than later so that name recognition begins to spread. Would that be you?
Someone that can run, please step up. The community needs you.

Something does not make sense. The article makes KH sound like a brave caring soul who sacrificed and even risked her life and property for her neighbors, but now she is a corrupt politician that steals from her office? Could it be that the new people do not respect her and made a power grab. It does sound like your talking about two different people

So you go to every ANC meeting for years and film from the back of the room and this has done what?

2:34,
To the best of my knowledge no one has done what you just described. I take it from your response that you neither watched any of the videos, nor have been to any of the meetings.

8:02,
Thanks! I agree about the Benning Road bit. I think Bladensburg comes up more because that section is entirely in ANC 5D (only half of the section of Benning is in ANC 5D), and Bladensburg just seems to have had more going on recently. But Benning Road is certainly no less important.

7:28,
I would suggest watching some of the meeting videos (or attending a meeting) if you want to understand the situation a little more clearly.

I enjoyed this article. the last comment about having some deaf neighbors joining the committee would be a good thing. first, the ANC meetings need to resolve the interpreting services. the ANC budget is not feasible to cover one year of interpreting Cost. That why they need to push to have one consolidated Interpreting services for all ANC meetings at no cost against the ANC budget. I have attended to two BZA meetings and they have asked me to leave so they can reduce the cost of interpreting services.

I'd say that from the media buzz, Kathy Henderson isn't good at organizing and leading the ANC meetings and the other commissioners.

As troublesome as all this is, there is a lot of day to day blocking and tackling that needs to get done. She may be good at rallying people on the streets, but, there are other things she's just not doing the job at.
