Whole Foods is Slightly Delayed, So What?

Untitled
The helpful folks at Ivy City Smokehouse want to sell you great seafood

Washingtonian revealed yesterday that the Whole Food on H Street won't open until sometime (no one is saying exactly when) in 2017. Previously, we had heard late 2016 (probably November). I know a lot of people are very eager to shop for fancy cheeses and organic produce, but the delay is likely not a large one. Plus, I'm pretty sure one can already get virtually everything locally that the Whole Foods will offer. We've got a ton of great sources for food in the larger neighborhood. I tweeted a bit about this last night on my way home, but I think it's worth noting here as well.

Meats: Harvey's Market (1309 5th Street, UM), A. Litteri (517-519 Morse), and Red Apron (1309 5th Street, UM).

Fish: District Fishwife (1309 5th Street, UM), Ivy City Smokehouse (1356 Okie Street).

Produce: We have three local farmers markets (13th and H, Union Market, and the newer one at the Starburst Plaza). There's the smaller Amaala Farms at Union Market. MOMs, Harris Teeter, and (generally) the Giant do a decent job with produce. Try Mexican Fruits (1236 4th Street) if you want to make something quickly with whatever is fresh and cheap.

Cheeses: Righteous Cheese (1309 5th Street, UM), and A. Litteri (517-519 Morse).

Breads and Pastries: Uni Bistro (403 H Street), Farewell (406 H Street), Panorama Bakery (1309 5th Street), Lyon Bakery (1309 5th Street, UM), Frenchie's at Maketto (1351 H Street), and the farmers markets.

Chocolates: Co Co Sala (1309 5th Street, UM)

Beer and Wine: Craft Beer Cellar (301 H Street), Schneider's (300 Mass Avenue), Cordial Craft Wine, Beer, and Spirits (1309 5th Street, UM), and the many local brewers and distillers located right in Ivy City.

And that's just a partial listing. There are a lot of other great local sources for all kinds of food, and food related items.

Ever hear at one stop shopping? Plus, Whole Food has a large selection of prepared food, some of it even healthy that is sorely lacking east of North Capitol. But I will survive my disappointment.

Yeah, this isn't about getting other things elsewhere. Obviously you can do that. The problem is I want to go to one grocery store and get most things. The only thing I can't get at whole foods is my 12 pack of diet coke, which i can get right across the street at CVS when Whole Foods comes in.

Agree about the prepared foods/salad bar that Whole Foods is going to bring. A quick lunch/dinner option that's quick and healthy will be a nice addition to the neighborhood. Also, don't forget about Union Kitchen grocery store.

This area definitely cannot be called a food desert like other neighborhoods! There are many food and shopping options but don't discount getting healthy prepared foods and some competition to encourage other stores to do better. Hopefully the Whole Foods will not have the long lines, lack of produce, and parking lot hassles that Safeway at Hechinger Mall does; maybe it won't have the issues of HT in NoMa (health department shut down; lines that people complain of; wiped out produce section); perhaps there will be more bike parking and greater variety than at MOMs; likely it will have greater selection and longer hours than Aldi's because it is operating on a different business model; and maybe it will be a step up from the Giant on H where you can't always get what you want or need as shelves don't get restocked. It provides another option with choices that some people want. While I may rarely shop there because of (perceived?) steep prices of the store called Whole Paycheck and I try to spend money in smaller local places, it will serve needs of many in the greater area that already travel to P Street or other WF located farther away. It is an option that many were looking forward to for holiday convenience shopping and selection but it will open sooner or later.

year-round, reliably fresh produce is something H Street is lacking and Whole Foods promises. The news of delay is disappointing, especially as we head into the fall/winter months and the farmers markets shut down.

Union Market and MOMs both have health prepared foods available.

I'm older and will be able to walk to the new Whole Foods. I cannot walk to Union Market or Okie Street.

I wasn't questioning that Whole Foods will provide convenience. Obviously, it will. I was just pointing out that we already have an embarrassment of riches as far as local food and beverage options.

you'll be lucky if youre still living in the neighborhood by the time WF comes. the rental prices are nuts. how the hell is the atlas flats charging 1700 for a 1bd, how? i dont care how much disposable money you have. living there at that rate is pure stupidity.

I know some very intelligent & sane people who live at the Atlas Flats. Some of them even live in the 1bd apartments there.

I think you meant you had "previously heard late 2016," right?

John,
Yes. I obviously hadn't my coffee yet when I wrote that. ;)

As the previous comments demonstrate, the most important thing in life is convenience. Who cares if Whole Foods has been a bit of a fraud when it comes to the qualities they claim like healthfulness, sustainability, or whether or not a product is "organic" or "free-range" or any ill-defined descriptors like that? Who care if they actually rip people off by selling homeopathic "remedies"? Who cares if their pricing has been found by the government to be dishonest? They're convenient, and that's what matters. The Dead Kennedys had it right: give me convenience or give me death!

I read on Yekp that station house DC could not fill their luxury rentals. 3K for a 1 bedroom.
They signed a deal with a company that places interns in DC for each semester. 3K for for few months is quite affordable for parents who want lil Becky to have a good life. Meanwhile the rents for the working class are kept inflated. BTW has anyone not seen the homeless walk up and stick their hand in the whole foods hot section? Just life in the big city Yall

I don't understand why poor people are so upset that we spend our money at Whole Foods or pay for our kids to live in 3k 1 bedroom luxury apartments while they intern for the Senators we bought. Its like my father taught me, "If you work hard and make an effort to be smart you would do alright. If you don't, you will end up in PG county, high as all shit on K2 laced with PCP."

There will always be rich and poor, but it is the working class who they feed off of.
You salary is taxed to feed and clothe the poor and provide them with free medical coverage. Then what is left over, you have spend on inflated health care and food and rents to the Banks, utilities and landlords who just pass on the cost of that free health care and theft back to you.
We can pay to support millions to collect disability checks and pay for multiple wars and send aid to foreign nations , but after you have worked and paid into Social Security you entire life you are told that there is not enough to allow the elderly to be clothed and sheltered and cared for in their remaining years. I want the needy to be taken care of but the working class has nothing left to give

blah blah I have to pay for this and that in DC an in America. It's not fair. I have to eat cabbage instead of kale. Someone is paying 1800 for a one bedroom. I am paying 1400 Not fair. Blah blah

it's always been 2017 for the H Street Whole Foods. Recent speculation of 2016 was speculation. The company always said 2017.

11:06,
I believe the company originally said their "target opening date" was "late 2016." The press release from November 6, 2013 is still out there on the internet, even if it's no longer on the Whole Foods website. You can actually see it as it appeared on the Whole Foods website by looking at this handy capture from the Wayback Machine.

Is it possible that Whole Foods may be looking to pull out of the deal because H street just is not turning out to be like their other markets?

When you lose salary when metro is delayed because they never did any of the past repair or maint work you paid them for.....life aint fair

When your loved one has a heart attack and dies because the ambulance and 911 system does not work......life aint fair

When you become sick because the food you bought was not inspected and your insurer wont pay for the drugs you need......Life aint fair

Funny thing about libertarians the only problems that exist are their problems

2:55,
Whole Foods is definitely going to open at that location. Things are just slightly behind the target schedule laid out three years ago.

Have you seen the lunch line at whole foods P ST? It's absolutely nuts! Like snowmageddon loco! They push the prepared foods section and it will thrive on H ST. WF will kill it in the to go healthy (and expensive) carryout lunch / dinner.
