Local News Brief: SEX BARBERSHOP No More, The Elroy Closes, & Nomad to Open Smoke Shop

Screen Shot 2016-09-06 at 6.26.58 AM

The hubbub surround the SEX BARBERSHOP must have been too much, as the sign (seen above in a tweet from Capital Fringe) has been repaired. Its now more mundane message announces the presence of a UNISEX BARBERSHOP.

The Elroy (1423 H Street) appears to have closed down. I'm not entirely sure when this happened, but District Cuisine noted it Saturday. The local blog also brings word that Nomad Hookah Bar (1200 H Street) will open a smoke shop next door.

The sign gets fixed the same week that Starbucks opened. A literal sign of the times. I was ambivalent about Yvette Alexander before but now she can not let the door hit her on the way out.

Another reminder of why everyone outside DC is dead on correct when they talk about DC as being kinda lame.

It's far from lame. These crumbling businesses need to GO! If your business needs to be called out in a public fashion to do basic repairs to signage that had problems for years then you don't care about said business. What a refreshing change.

Yeah, what a refreshing change. Let's take something harmless that lots of people got a lot of amusement out of, and turn it into something bland and boring.

Oh brother. Reston is the definition of lame, but it may be more your speed.

People hate fun here.

There have been intermittent complaints to the police regarding this barbershop's owners being hostile to newer neighbors over the past half dozen years. While unsubstantiated comments of that sort do not inherently imply anything credible and negative about this establishment, one can easily see the signage issue as in line with such complaints. The fire at this place of business happened years ago and it is probably not too much to ask that the proprietor fix such problems within several years.

It is not a question of fun versus no fun, as other commentators have stated, but behaving as an an upright citizen. And to all those folks who decry the loss of a useful navigational landmark, well, honestly, I would think that available cross-streets and GPS tools render the use of such markers as unnecessary. But, hey, if one needs to one can say, "look for the unisex barbershop sign" as easily as "look for the sex barbershop sign."

just sayin'

There have been intermittent suggestions that Anon 4:52 hates puppies and kittens. While unsubstantiated comments of that sort do not inherently imply anything credible and negative about Anon 4:52, I'm going to mention them anyway because I know that what will stick in people's minds is the idea that Anon 4:52 hates puppies and kittens, and not the caveat. Just like Anon 4:52 knows what he/she is doing in in the first paragraph of his/her post.

Anyway. One only gets from failing to fix the sign because it's funny/interesting to 'that's not behaving as an upright citizen' by having a ridiculously straightlaced idea of what an upright citizen is. Someone who's doing what they do on their property with their property, and in the process amuses some folks, and who can only be construed as negatively affecting other people because some people get the shakes when they even just *see* the word "sex" in public, seems to me more of a contribution to the city than people clenched so tight they could turn coal into diamonds.

I like when old, intolerant people post what they think is appropriate. I find it amusing, and feel sorry for them at the same time. The internet must be a great development for them as a tool to help them feel like they are discussing something of great importance. They need these kinds of things in order not to feel so isolated. They need to feel like they're being heard and contributing to their communities. I'm an atheist, but God bless their little souls. Keep at it, old timers, YOU are the only thing left keeping DC wierd! Ironic, but true.

Yvette has a limited time in office, and she spends it whinging about a sign?

She could have beat up DCRA to get some code enforccement on the slums in Ward 7 or
pollution in her ward...

Nope, she is on about a sign.

Ooh, the poop man has spoken. In the same condescending category as 99% of his posts, but not as disgusting as that time he went so far over the line of simple human decency that Joe Englert felt the need to call him out personally here. I guess we should always be happy for what little victories we get.
