Police have identified the victim in yesterday's fatal shooting in the 700 block of 16th Street (Rosedale) as 18 year old Tesean Jermaine Ashe of SE. Earlier reports referenced the location as the 1500 block of Benning Road. Police responded to a call for a shooting at 5:26 p.m. and found Mr. Ashe "unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds." He was transported to a hospital, but did not survive his injuries. Shortly after the shooting MPD tweeted a look out for a black male, with short hair, wearing a black T-shirt, blue jeans, and a black bandana, while operating a black scooter.

The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at 202-727-9099.  Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.

I live very close to the Pentacle Apartments, where this and many other homicides have occurred over the years. I'm normally a bleeding heart liberal who has genuinely conflicting emotions about the pros and cons of gentrification, but I will state unequivocally that the day they announce those apartments are being torn down, redeveloped, or otherwise will no longer be a blight to the surrounding neighborhood, I will pop the biggest bottle of champagne I can find. That apartment complex is such a hotbed for all sorts of crime and gang-related activity, and EVERYONE knows it, including the police (who are there almost daily). Seriously... it's gotta happen sooner or later, right?

Sad...

Sounds like a drug gang thing.

pat -- what's the part that sounds like a drug gang thing?

I don't know that Pentacle will ever close. Its owned by a very wealthy respected family that's raking in the cash from Section 8.

I understand why you are repulsed by certain neighbours. I was in Gallery Place on Friday 8pm and 10-12 African American teens on bikes. They were riding in the middle of 7th street, back and forth , blocking and stopping traffic. There were 6 MPD standing on the sidewalk watching them and every time the teens circled back the teens extended their arms and gave the cops the middle finger. One Asian cop was actually filming the teens. This was still going on for 15mins when I walked away. Was this a protest? What if you were in a car trying to go somewhere important? Can the liberals explain to me how this behaviour benefits society?

Can anyone confirm more details---was this a gang shooting? Did it take place in the residence or was it outdoors?

Julia,
I've been assuming it took place outdoors, or that Mr. Ashe was at least found outdoors. While the Pentacle Apartments, and the immediately surrounding area, may have a reputation as a bit of a hot spot for crime, I feel extremely confident in saying that any suggestion in the comments above attempting to classify this as a "gang" thing falls squarely in the category of pure speculation. The police haven't made any public statements to that extent.

I was the original commenter in this thread, and I apologize for not communicating better. I did not mean to imply that the victim was involved in any sort of gang activity or that this particular homicide was in any way gang-related. Reading my comment again, I can certainly see how it was taken that way, so I should have used my words more carefully. I was merely venting my frustration because there IS a lot of crime centered in and immediately around that apartment complex (some of which, yes, is gang-related, though there's currently no evidence available to suggest that this one was). It's not an exaggeration to say the cops are there multiple times a week investigating various incidents. As a homeowner who has lived here for nearly a decade, I truly love Rosedale and have invested a great deal of time, sweat, and financial equity into my property, as have most of my neighbors. And it's just incredibly frustrating to work hard and take pride in your neighborhood only to be frequently woken up by gunfire coming from that complex or to worry for your own personal safety every time you have to walk by it.

He was my friend knew him since elementry school to me graduating high school in 2015...please don't no matter what he was doing or what happened he didn't have to to die...not him he just had a daughter...I've been looking at different case result but they all say the same thing...I try to stay out the way but I feel like I have to get a gun just to protect myself and my family...DC isn't what they make it out to be... I'm tired of living here seeing losing friends...I just want it all to end.........I love you T like you was my own family...always and forever

What happened no else has anything to say now.
Ay homey, you stay up and stay positive even when it seems like nothing around is, im not going to say its easy but its definitely something that you can do. Dont get the gun yet, I understand the need for it, but project yourself first in your mind in the direction you want yourself and your family to go in and you will be surprised of how you can get there. Stay positive, stay tough, stay humble, stay focused. Make purpose.

usually when one young black male is shot by a suspect described as another
black male, it's one of a short list of motives
1) Gang issues.
2) Drug issues (See 1)
3) Sexual jealousy involving a common partner, usually a woman. Also see 1...
4) Revenge for aggravated assault or homicide ( See 1)

It is usually not a boy scout merit badge to get shot or to shoot at someone from a scooter.
There are the occasional serial killers out there, but that's pretty rare.
There are also mistaken identity.

However, gang issues are the one to look at first.

It's still sad. An 18 year old young man is dead, someone else is looking at 25-life...

pat - someone *may* be looking at 25 to life. this is DC. i wouldn't even dare to speculate what the consequences might be for a murderer who is not yet an adult.

25 to life? B please. 10 years, out in 5 with good behavior. We need to coddle these people, or better yet pay them to not shoot at each other.

@Victor
Do you know who shot him?

The victim was awaiting sentencing (scheduled for 10/17) and was on high supervision release for an assault with a dangerous weapon (gun) conviction. Fair bet that he also has a juvenile record.

Doesn't make his death any less senseless, but sheds light on why he was targeted.
