Local News Briefing: Dia de los Mezcales, Brewers on the Block, REI Opens, & Halloween at Rosedale

Bone up on your mezcal knowledge with Cordial Fine Wine & Spirits' (Union Market, 1309 Fifth St.) Dia de los Mezcales Thursday, Oct. 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets are $40, and you can learn more about the history, production, and varieties of the spirit. Enjoy five different mescals paired with selections from the BBQ Joint (also at Union Market).

This Sunday Union Market (1309 Fifth St.) hosts the third annual Brewers On The Block from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event features many local breweries, cideries, and meaderies, plus food vendors. Tickets are $40 for general admission (includes unlimited tastings), or $60 for the VIP package that gets you in at 1 p.m., and includes a commemorative glass.

It's not too late to donate, or volunteer to pitch in for Halloween at Rosedale at the Rosedale Rec (1701 Gales St.). They hope to serve more kids than ever this year. Come help make it a scary good time.

NoMa's new REI flagship store (201 M St.) officially opens today at 10 a.m., and they have a full weekend of events planned. Based on everything I've seen on Twitter, the space itself is really impressive and cool.

REI line was 800 people deep at 9:45a. Marching band and free firehook pastries set up near the entrance.

REI was insane this morning. I knew there would be a lot of people there but it was just ludicrous. Where did they all come from? Those of us who have lived in the neighborhood for a long time should buckle up-- the floodgates are about to open and the neighborhood is about to go full-on U Street.

I walked over to REI this morning. Saw quite a few neighbors but there were people in line with me from MD, VA, Anacostia, upper NW, etc.

On Reddit the discussion was people came from as far as rhode island.

REI is great news for DC. They make great products that last for years. I am crossing my fingers that a Cabela's would open closer to DC area sometime.

OOOH! Cabela's! As much as I would love that, I have serious doubts that it would open up anywhere near DC. The target demographic lies a bit further afield. The cost for the square footage their stores demand is also probably not viable for them (in terms of overall in-store profit) anywhere near the city. It would be cool though. Even though I'm not an avid hunter/camper/outdoorsman, I love walking around and imagining what I would/could do if I were.... or what I would do in the face of a zombie outbreak.

Heard some talk over the weekend that Wegmans may be considering the former Walmart site at Bladensburg & NY Ave. Anyone hear anything on that?

Meh. This REI is okay. Nothing that special.

@8:47 - that rumor has been around since douglas development first showed plans for that area. the two anchor stores were designed to look like Wegman's and Target. Hope they both open in that site.
