Two Officers Shot & Injured & a Gunman Killed in Trinidad Last Night

Screen Shot 2017-02-24 at 9.36.44 AM

The two MPD officers shot last night in the 1400 block of Morse sustained non-life threatening wounds, and are expected to survive. The gunman who shot them is dead. It happened about 10:40 p.m. last night in Trinidad, and many people in the immediate area heard the gunshots. Many more heard helicopters and sirens. There's obviously lots of coverage, some of which I've provided links to below.

The crime lately has been nuts. Usually it's slower in February because of the cold weather. Thanks global warming.

I appreciate being able to find out at least a bit about what happened. I heard the volley of fire and the simultaneous sirens last night from farther up Trinidad Ave and immediately went outside. "Think that was gunfire?" my wife asked. "Definitely." "Didn't sound close, though." "No, but it was a long volley... could be pretty bad." Looks like we were both right.

Problem with a resident, or time to bring the entry checkpoints back?

What will it take for MPD to crack down on Starburst and the 1300-1400 block of Florida? Clear it out! Is there an organized citizen effort to ask for a greater police presence?

We need ANC to demand increased presence on foot by police, but more importantly, Starburst needs to be closed permanently and replaced with a constructive amenity-- like a dog park, or commercial entity (coffee shop maybe)? If you live in the area, write to your ANC member. A number of residents already have, but the more of us that speak up, the more they must listen! Thank you to Frozen Tropics for staying on the ball and posting about the incidents as they happen.

I hope MPD officers recover quickly,
I hope the shooting is properly investigated.
If this is a good shoot, and it seems at first blush to be so,
well, one Bad Hombre is gone and the planet spins
just a little lighter.
If it's a bad shoot, i hope the courts are able
to resolve this and the outcome is
acceptable to the people of the city.

Agreed with 12:22; 99% of it seems to happen at or around the Starburst or that segment of Florida. What are we going to do? Redeveloping Starburst and the entire shopping center is long overdue, but we need solutions now.

"Re-Development" and police presence does not fix the problem. It simply moves it elsewhere. A dog park simply means grass to lie on while high. And once the development is done on 8th street you'll have another large group looking for a new place to hang out.

We have to collectively decide if drugs are a humanitarian crisis, where moving folks and police presence and heavy gentrification are all outlawed or if it's a criminal act, in which case minimum sentencing needs to be so punitive that the abusers and sellers are gone forever.

Otherwise you're simply moving a problem.

5:44 I apologize; I didn't mean to suggest that redeveloping the area was the solution, just that crime seems to flourish on those blocks because people (and businesses) have neglected them. I don't have an answer to the problem. Offering compassion, being tough, or jail time won't help if we can't offer a better way to live life. It's hard to keep people off of drugs when there's no incentive for them to be sober.
