Local Briefing: Humane Rescue Alliance at Liberty Tree, ANC 5D Mtg, & a Marathon Runner Motivation Station

Untitled
Hey! Liberty Tree is raising money for the Humane Rescue Alliance

Liberty Tree (1016 H St.) will donate 10% of all sales from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 19  to the Humane Rescue Alliance. The Humane Rescue Alliance was born out of the merger of the Washington Humane Society and the Washington Animal Rescue League. The group assists local residents with a variety of animal-related needs. You can adopt a pet through them, get financial help with veterinary needs or pet food, obtain assistance with pet behavioral problems, take advantage of their vaccination or spay/neuter services, or get help from officers for a lost, injured, or abused animal.

Mark your calendars now for Advisory Neighborhood Commission 5D's upcoming public meeting, which will take place Tuesday, March 14 at 7 p.m. at the Fifth District Station at 1805 Bladensburg Road.

H Street Runners and Argonaut Running Club (on Twitter at @ArgoRunClub) are proudly joining forces again on Saturday, March 11th, to host a special Runner Motivation Station on H Street during the DC Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and Half Marathon. Join the group at 1206 H Street, outside of the Queen Vic, as they gather to rock out and cheer (loudly!) for runners as they approach Mile 12 of the race course.

The Queen Vic will open at 7:00 a.m. to support this effort. The bar will be open with food and drink. 10% off food & drink for all runners in the marathon or half marathon and for anyone who comes out to support a runner in the marathon/half marathon. ALSO, runners get a free shot of Jameson.  (You can stop in for your shot during the race, or come by with your race bib after.)

And if you're hoping to hear some live Rock 'n' Roll music that morning, you can't beat the station's location, which is just yards from Rock 'n' Roll's H Street Stage (next to the AutoZone at 12 & H) with live bands rocking out for the duration of the race.

Their goal is to help make H Street one of the most high energy stretches of the marathon course. To that end, they'll have posters/signs, noisemakers, and even some fun, non-traditional sources of energy to hand out to runners (e.g., choclate, jelly beans). They'll have markers and supplies on hand if you would like to make up your own sign that morning.  Join them at 12th and H on Saturday for the DC Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and have a drink, hold a sign, listen to live music, and just get loud.

There's some cost to putting on this event, and so the organizers ask that participants please consider making a small donation ($3-5) to help pay for the cost of poster board, candy, and other motivation station supplies.

Here's the timeline for the event:

7 a.m.

  • Marathon/Half Marathon start
  • Arrival/Setup, Queen Vic open

7:30 a.m.

  • DC Police & Fire vehicle roll through to ensure race route is clear
  • Official pace vehicle & camera trucks follow

7:45 a.m.

  • Elite marathoners arrive on H Street

8ish

  • Majority of runners begin to Arrive on H Street

11 a.m.

  • Most runners have cleared H Street

Please know that this Runner Motivation Station is family friendly and open to the entire community, runners and non-runners alike.  In fact, the organizers stress that they'd like to have as much of the H Street/Capitol Hill North community come out as possible.  And given that you're probably not going to be able to drive anywhere due to marathon-related road closures, why not come have some fun on H Street during the race?

I'm a non-runner, H St. Resident who is running the Half Marathon on Saturday. I'm so excited to finish the run in my neighborhood. Thanks to all who come out to cheer, and thanks to the organizers!

I hate this vanity race.

3:36,

It seems preferable to vanity trolling.

Is Hill Prince open?

7:29,

Someone just told me they are opening to the public tomorrow. I do not have any details (or verification).

Looks like the WCP has details.

What is happening to that cat?!?

10:04,
She's just really excited to spread the word about the fundraiser, or she's yawning.

I don't think 3:36 was trolling. It's one thing to have roads closed for a run in support of cancer, diabetes, et al. Another thing for inconvenience for a for-profit fun run. I say boo hiss.
