Halal Guys Opening May 12

We have an opening date for the Halal Guys 814 H Street location. It sounds like quite the occasion, with live music, djs, giveaways, prizes, and even free food for the first 1,000 customers. It does look like they want you to register. You can sign up for "pre-opening VIP events and parties" on their D.C. website. They will open at 11 a.m. Friday, May 12. The Halal Guys serve sandwiches and platters with chicken, gyro meat, or falafel, as well as side orders of fries, falafel, hummus, tahini, and baba ganouj, and baklava for dessert.

A Chinese Garden at the National Arboretum

The Washington Post has an interesting piece on plans for $100 million Chinese garden coming to the U.S. National Arboretum. The Chinese government has offered to pick up the entire tab for the lavish gardens, which will stretch over 12 acres. Construction is scheduled to start this summer, and expected to take about 30 months.

Ginkgo Spraying Starts Today

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will start the annual ginkgo spraying today. The spraying of female ginkgo trees will take place at night between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. The idea is to prevent the trees from producing their fruits, which have an unpleasant odor that is even stronger if they fall on the ground and someone crushes them under foot or tire. DDOT will spray the trees with Shield-3EC 24(C), which they have employed for the past two decades. Spraying will start in Ward 5, followed by Wards 4, 3, 2, 1, and 6. There are no female ginkgos in Wards 7 and 8. You don't need to move your car, or do anything else.

DDOT has a webpage up with additional information, but it doesn't look like map is displaying the spray schedule yet. Here's a map of the street trees all around the District, and you can view details about individual trees by clicking on their icons. You can call DDOT at 202-671-5133 with questions about spraying.

They really should open up the southern gate of the arboretum. Everyone on Nextdoor keeps talking about it but it never happens.

I heard that Mayor Gray will be coming back as our Mayor next cycle.

7:26,

I would love to see that entrance reopen. Let's hope this new garden can strengthen the case for that.

Gray is a useless crook.

They will reopen the entrance when they can staff it and add more security. The arboretum also cited issues (nextdoor posting) with people from the neighborhood dumping trash, furniture, etc. inside the gates. That's a big reason why it closed. I'm sure security is a huge issue there with vandalism and whatnot.
