Local Briefing: Fight Childhood Cancer at Star & Shamrock, Valentine's Plans, & Local Spots Hiring

Version 4

Get buzzed for a great cause at Star & Shamrock

Head down to the Star & Shamrock (1341 H Street NE) on March 11th (1pm) for a Shave Off for Kids with Cancer event to benefit the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which funds research on childhood cancers.

Got Valentine's Day Plans?

A few neighborhood spots are doing something special to mark the occasion. These solid options should have you covered whether you plan to spend the evening with your significant other, or just fly solo. DC Harvest (517 H Street NE) offers a "sensuous dining experience featuring our locally sourced winter menu along with opulent specials" and a new reserve wine list and romantic cocktails. You can make reservations through Tock. There's a $5 per person deposit, but it's refunded when you dine with DC Harvest on the 14th. Church & State (2nd floor 1236 H Street NE) is running a couples cocktail special where $20 gets you truffles and two cocktails 7:30pm–midnight. Downstairs on the 1st floor of 1234 you'll find the Anti-Valentine's Day Party (and plenty of old school video games) at Atlas Arcade.

Seeking local employment?

A number of local places are hiring right now. Below are some postings I've seen recently.

Solid State Books (600 H Street NE), which is currently operating as a pop-up while their permanent home is completed, is hiring full-time booksellers. Whether you have an interest in working there, or not, you can visit the store seven days a week to shop or just stop by one of their events.

Soon to open Ivy City restaurant Gravitas (1401 Okie Street NE) is hiring for both front and back of the house. From a job posting:

Gravitas is a uniquely American restaurant by Chef Matt Baker, taking you to places remembered and anew. Sourcing our products from local farms and waters, Gravitas highlights the abundant resources of the Chesapeake and surrounding areas. Every week we will create a unique comprised of a mix of Vegetarian, Seafood and Meat dishes; allowing guests to create their own Tasting Menu. Each menu will feature dishes comprised of the very best seasonal offerings of the field and market.

Dio Wine Bar (904 H Street NE) is hiring cooks. According to their Craigslist ad the position can be part-time or full-time (3-5 shifts a week) with open weeknight availability required. They are looking to hire immediately.

Farmbird (625A H Street NE) is looking for cooks, cashiers, and managers.

The just opened Pluma by Bluebird Bakery (391 Morse Street NE) is hiring full-time baristas.

The Wydown (600 H Street NE) is also hiring baristas, and it can be full-time or part-time.

Red Apron Butcher at Union Market (1309 Fifth Street NE) has openings for both an assistant manager and a bartender.

DC Harvest (517 H Street NE) seeks experienced bartenders.

Does anyone know if they are tearing down those old buildings across from CVS on H and 7th?

There is a chain link fence around them now and it sure look like they are coming down.

Thanks, It is a shame but at least the corner building will be incorporated as a fauxcade.

I am surprised the sushi building held out.
