Vigil for Fallen MPD Officer to Cause Some Traffic Disruption Tonight

If you plan to travel in and around H Street NE this evening you should be aware that the streetcar will temporarily suspend service from 5–8pm and multiple buses (B2, X1, X2, X3 and X9) in the area will detour from 4:30–8:30pm due to a road closure in the 1200 block of H Street NE. The closure is related to a vigil for Officer Jamal Shaw who was killed in a car crash last Friday. Details (from an email sent to a local listserve) are below.

[T]ragedy struck the Metropolitan Police Department last week when Officer Jamal Shaw was involved in a fatal vehicle accident in Prince George’s County while off duty. Officer Shaw joined MPD in May of 2015 and was assigned to the First District.

Family and friends of Officer Shaw have organized a candlelight vigil for him on Thursday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m. The vigil has been scheduled to take place at the First District substation, located at 500 E Street SE.

Due to the expected crowd size, we anticipate some traffic challenges in the immediate area for a brief period of time. While we will have officers assigned to assist with traffic control, we recognize the potential for some inconveniences. We truly appreciate your understanding and patience as we remember Officer Jamal Shaw tomorrow evening.

Did I miss something? Article states vigil is at 500 E Street SE, so why is the 1200 block of H closed off?

4:59,
I don't know. I assume it's related to a procession or service of some sort. I just know that both WMATA & the streetcar put out notices of transport disruptions/detours.

I am really sorry for the loss, but I am also at a loss why his non-duty related death needs to shut down traffic for three hours?
