A man was fatally shot early Sunday morning in the 1500 block of Benning Road NE. MPD officers responding to investigate the sound of gunfire at 12:13am found 27-year-old Wilbert Brooks (of NE D.C.) suffering multiple gunshot wounds. They attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead on the scene and taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. If you have information about this crime you can contact police (you can remain anonymous) at 202-727-9099 or text the tip line at 50411. MPD offers a reward of up to $25,000 for information "which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia."
I believe this is the eighth shooting within a week and a half on a stretch of Benning Road NE (from the 1500 to 2300 block). It started Sept. 21st with a quadruple shooting in the 1800 block that left four victims wounded. Police have arrested two men in connection with the Sept. 21st shooting. 26-year-old Michael Ross was arrested Sept. 25th, and 27-year-old Anthony Farmer was arrested Sept. 28th. Both men have been charged with Assault with Intent to Kill (Gun).

Nearby in the 1600 block of E Street NE a 9-year-old girl was wounded when she was hit by a stray bullet about 9:30pm Friday night as she played outside. Per an email sent by an MPD representative to a local email group, the victim was taken to a hospital in stable condition. The Washington Post has more details, including that police apparently recovered several shell casings in the area of the shooting. If you have any information about this shooting please contact MPD at the numbers listed above.

Police continue to ask for the public's help to identify a suspect in the Sept. 26 murder of 25-year-old Marquiawn Williams in the 1800 block of Benning Road NE.

i had made the earlier comment about police cars stationed at pretty much every hour around MD ave and Benning road. they actually seemed to have stopped that practice on thursday of last week. i'm not saying there is a correlation with the shooting, but i'm also not saying there isn't a correlation....

It doesn't exactly line up but I think what you were seeing before was the summer crime prevention initiative: https://mpdc.dc.gov/page/summer-crime-prevention-initiative

anon - you're probably right. i will add that on my commute today, there were three parked police cars back in their spots again, all with their lights on. one in the CVS parking lot, facing the intersection, and two on MD ave, parked right at the corner of MD ave and H st. it's probably some kind of response to the event.

Huh... didn't realize I was on anon. Oops. No matter, yea there is usually a higher presence in the area but over the summer it was constant because of that program. I think some of the activity in the CVS parking lot is related to something happening.
