Police & Helicopter Wednesday Night

Related to the situation (hostage/shotgun) at 10th & Mass. Late Wednesday night I saw emergency vehicles & a helicopter headed southwest. I suspect they were headed towards the situation on Capitol Hill. Any confirmation ? Apparently the suspect also hit a bicyclist at at 6th & Florida (at up to 80 miles per hour). The bicyclist (has been taken to the hospital). This apparently occured during a police pursuit. He (the suspect) has now barricaded himself inside a rowhouse. It isn't clear if the suspect lives in the rowhouse, or has any connection to the rowhouse. The news (ABC 7) speculates, based on the opinion of neighbors, that it was a random entry (perhaps explaining the rumored hostage situation). The suspect is apparently in the basement with a shotgun (he has been there since around 10:30 pm). Surrounding residents have been evacuated. No further news is yet available.

Multiple Musical Offerings coming up at the Atlas!

Three companies offer audiences a musical Valentine’s assortment!

(Washington, DC) The weekend before Valentine’s Day will find the Atlas Performing Arts Center filled with the sweet sounds of melody to delight lovers and music-lovers alike! Sweet being the operative word as Atlas Arts Partners and friends look to the universal theme of love for their programming inspiration.

Congressional Chorus’ newest endeavor, Love, American Style, is a candy-coated evening of American love songs which will premiere at the Atlas Saturday, February 10th at 8pm. Unlike most choir performances this choral confection will delight audiences on all sides of the Hallmark Holiday. The 20 year old choir, now under the direction of David Simmons, will perform love songs in a cabaret setting in the Atlas’ versatile Sprenger Theatre. Audiences will enjoy an array of sweet treats from area bakers along with coffee, tea and punch. Although the Chorus now calls the Atlas home they will continue to bring their uniquely American repertoire to other Washington area venues. The following evening on February 11th at 7pm they will bring the Valentine’s treat to Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church in Bethesda, MD.

Tickets are $25.

That same weekend, on both February 9th and 10th at 8pm, will find cabaret sensation Beverly Cosham heating up the Atlas’ Lab Theatre 2 with her phenomenal talent. Ms. Cosham takes to the mike in the first half of the African Continuum Theatre Company’s J’s Jook Joint, a modern day take on the historical “jook joint” experience. The Washington Post proclaimed that Ms. Cosham is a “master at creating a warmly, evocative mood, no matter how familiar the lyric or how common the sentiment.”

Tickets are $15-$20

Audiences can conclude a musical Valentine’s weekend on Sunday February 11th at 3pm with Love You Madly! by Washington Musica Viva. Musica Viva is an ensemble drawn from members of the Washington National Symphony Orchestra, Washington area free-lance musicians, and favorite guest artists from New York, Boston, and elsewhere.

Musica Viva provides monthly performances of classical and contemporary chamber music, often with literary and visual artists. This month’s offerings include the title number by Washington’s own Duke Ellington as well as new works including Emily’s Song for bass singer and trombone by Lawrence Moss (premiere) - a new approach to the poetry of Emily Dickinson and Had Us at Hello for bass singer and piano by Charley Gerard. Text in English, German, and French from newspaper articles about athletes Lance Armstrong and Mark McGwire.

Tickets are $15-$20

Tickets for all performances are available at the Atlas Performing Arts Center Box Office 202.399.7993 or online at www.atlasarts.org

**Patrons coming to Friday and Saturday evening performances are encouraged to take the Atlas District Courtesy Shuttle which will bring patrons to and from Union Station between 7pm and 2am. Call 1.301.751.1802 to arrange for a pickup.

Hill Rag: H Street Life

IMG_0131
Art on display during the 2005 H Street Festival
The Hill Rag has a piece on the new arts offerings in the 400 block of H Street (the art classes I mentioned this morning, and the Dissident Gallery across the street), and the upcoming bar opening in the 1200 and 1300 blocks of H Street. It also mentions that new art galleries are expected to open across the street from the Rock and Roll Hotel (which, despite what the article says, is located in the 1300 block of H Street, rather than the 1200 block).

ANC 6C Considers Singles Ban

IMG_1111
The owner of Brother's Liquor (Florida Ave) arrives at work in the morning.

ANC 6C (6C covers the western portion of H Street, and 6A covers the eastern portion) is considering following ANC 6A's lead & pursuing a ban on the sale of single beers (it seems unclear if the ban will cover only beers, or small bottles of liquor as well) on H Street. It will be interesting to see how a ban might affect the area. Will it reduce crime? Will it reduce loitering (I know from having been in Brother's Liquor when some of the guys hanging on the corner Street do their buying that at least one of them sometimes clutches an O'Doul's inside a paper bag)? Will people just walk up the block & buy a beer from Brother's Liquor (Florida Ave), or Rose's Liquor (Bladensburg Road)?

H Street Co-op Fundraiser

From the listserv:

The H Street Community Market (a food cooperative in the works for Capitol Hill) is hosting their first fundraiser on February 3rd at Vegetate. The coop will carry food from local producers and small farmers.

We will be a grocery store which offers everything from personal care to prepared foods, a large bulk section and local beer and wine. By purchasing local foods we will help keep costs down for the consumer and will also support our local farmers and producers. "

Art Classes on H Street

I picked up a flyer outside Sidamo (the coffee shop at 417 H Street) the other day advertising local art classes. The painting and the mosaics sessions advertised are either halfway through, or already ending, but there is a beginner's drawing class that starts up in early February (the 7th). Here are some details from the card:

417 H Street NE (2nd floor)
202-340-3023
artclasses[at]ausdi.org

Art Classes on H Street will be held at the studio of Azerbijani artist Shahin Shikhaliyev. Shahin graduated from the Azebaijan State Art College in 1986 and has exhibited his paintings and drawings worldwide. More information on his work may be found at www.ausdi.org.

The card says that the schedule for the drawing class is forthcoming (my card is old, you can probably get a new one on the door of 417 H Street) so no hours are given, but the hours for the other two courses were all evening hours. No word on the pricing, but the intro to painting (4 1.5 hour sessions) was $294 plus materials, and the intro to mosaics was $135 (for one 3 hour session & 1 1.5 hour session) including materials.

The New York Times looks at the East Village bar Heather's (opened by a Rockville, MD native) and its neighbors.

Rib Tip Serving Lunch

I don't have the menu in front of me, but I believe the new hours keep them open (closed Sundays) until 3pm during the week, and 4pm on Saturdays. The lunch menu has ribs (I believe it said "Chicago style") and rib sandwiches. Anyone tried the lunch yet? The Rib Tip is located on the corner of 12th & H Street.

DC Pedestrian Master Plan

I received the following by email (from a Commissioner in 6A), and it thought it would be of interest:

The DC Department of Transportation has begun a year long study of the walking conditions in the District. I would appreciate it if you could post this brief announcement to your local neighborhood listserves. We would like to get as much input as possible into this planning process citywide.

If you care about walking in the District, brick sidewalks vs. concrete, motorists running stop signs, speeding traffic, dangerous intersections, than please take a look at this web link:

http://www.tooledesign.com/projects/dc/

There is a link on this page to participate in a 10 minute survey where you can provide input into the issues I mentioned above. I work for this company, and I can assure you, that on every one of the projects we work on, we read every comment. Your comments can lead to
improvement projects and policy changes that will have a direct impact on the quality of life we experience as pedestrians in the district.

WP: Spingarn Athlete Charged In Shooting

Gary Durant (17), a star high school athlete from Spingarn High School (located behind the Langston Dwellings), has been arrested in the fatal shooting a few weeks ago of Lovell Harrison (also 17). Mr. Harrison's body was discovered in an alley. Mr. Harrison was a high school student in Arlington, but formerly resided in the neighborhood. His father was killed two years before only a few blocks away. Mr. Durant, of the 2200 block of H Street NE, has been charged with second degree murder while armed. The shooting occurred in the Carver Terrace neighborhood (located east of Trinidad).

Fast Times @Rollerderby High

IMG_1464
I was at a community meeting tonight at the Joe Cole Center (Montello & Morse) and I stepped outside to make a phone call. Imagine my surprise to see a group of women waiting outside the door with a box of skates. It came out that they were, in fact, the DC Roller Girls, and they were waiting to use the gym for practice. I cannot express how odd it was to see a roller derby team at the Rec. Odd, but good. If you aren't familiar with the new DC Roller Girls (you may have heard a recent interview with some team members that aired on NPR), or if you are a fan (or just curious), this Friday is your big chance to catch them. They're having a first anniversary party (Fast Times at Roller Derby High) this Friday at the Rock & Roll Hotel (1353 H Street). $12 in advance & $15 at the door. Buy tickets online here or here. Music 8pm-11pm.

Nice Video on Philly's Italian Market

Check out this video (which I cross posted to the Capital City Market site) about the market in Philadelphia. Yes, the Italian Market currently has more to offer in terms of restaurants, coffee shops, and overall consumer friendliness, but the Capital City Market has potential to become something similar (the Italian Market is a good model). Personally, I'd like to see more of the places sell retail, as well as wholesale. I'd also like to see better signs indicating which places do sell retail (because many currently do, but the only way you know which ones is to go with someone who already knows).

Got Something to Say...

about Trinidad?
I'm (on behalf of a contractor working for the city) actively soliciting info (and ASAP because he's got a presentation to make on Friday). He's specifically looking for people that have lived here a long time and can give him a little sense of the place's history. He's trying to put together a flag for the community, and he's run into the problem that Trinidad (not uncommon in some historically working/lower-class communities) is not well documented. Right now he's got an early 80's cite from the Post mentioning something about athletes (in conjunction with the construction on Joe Cole), but not much else (aside from a history of community activism). Let's help the guy, and ourselves, out a bit. Special request here, please email me a little info and phone numbers (no time for dilly-dallying here) for interested individuals. My email address is inked[at]hotmail.com. You can also call 202-631-8254 (leave a voicemail). Just let me know soon. This is part of the DDOT beautification project in the neighborhood.

Ok, so it's hardly the first time the Rock & Roll Hotel (1353 H Street) has caught the attention of DCist writers, but it's more the amount of attention this time.
Check out the post anticipating Sunday's punk extravaganza featuring the Queers, Riptides, Ripouts, and Heart Attacks. Doors open at 7, and show starts at 8. $10 cover.

The second mention is for Saturday's DJ set ($10 cover, but it's FREE if you show up before the clock strikes 10pm). Nick Zinner, gutarist for the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, will be spinning.

As always, The first floor (where they have shows) is 18+. The upstairs (where they have all the cool little rooms, and the main bar) is 21+.

A New Market Site

It's still very much a work in progress, but here's a central site where you can check out much of the available news on the Capital City Market (in chronological order!). Richard has yet to write an intro, and I'm still working out a few kinks in some links. But go ahead and check it out (note the always growing photo set on the bottom right of the page). Feel free to let me know if you see issues, or an article I've missed. I already know (but haven't yet fixed one link to the Express that is mislabeled, and one link that is out of chron order). I'll fix those, but feel free to let me know other thoughts (I'm going to separate out the Post Market map). It's not going to be a regularly updated blog like Frozen Tropics, but we'll stick up new articles as they appear, and it will get some original content (some of which may also appear on Frozen Tropics), but the main idea is to get all the info in one place.

Guardian Angels March in Carver Terrace

Here's the video from Channel 7 of last night's Guardian Angel/citizen march through the Carver Terrace neighborhood. The Angels recently announced plans to remain in Carver Terrace & to begin a youth program for kids aged 8-15. Participants in the youth program would not patrol their neighborhood, but would participate in neighborhood cleanups & plantings, & would be given the opportunity to study martial arts.

Here's the Channel 5 video on the march and the shooting that specifically spurred this march. The shooting occurred Saturday evening a little before 5:30. A man was working on an apartment he is renovating, and he had his ten year old daughter with him. The man approached a group of youths who had been playing football in the street and were now sitting on, or leaning against his car. He asked them to move. A few minutes later a rock was thrown at the man while he retrieved something from his car. He was then beaten & shot repeatedly. The video says the man was shot at least 6 times. I've heard nine (it appear he has 9 holes from 6 bullets). His daughter witnessed much of the attack. Luckily, he's in stable condition at the hospital. The shooter has not yet been apprehended.

Here's Channel 9 on the shooting.

Community Rocked by Recent Violence Calls for Help

(Washington DC) – A contractor, working to rehabilitate a building located at 1229 18th Street, NE was shot nine times on January 13, 2007, after asking a group of youths to get off of his car. The victim, a law-abiding and peaceful family man is in stable condition following the shooting. The victim’s ten-year old child witnessed the shooting. The community was shaken again, the very next day by a shooting occurring at Yums Carryout, located at 1023 Bladensburg Road, NE. Two quadruple shootings and other shootings have resulted in four homicides within the last four months, shaking the very foundation of the Carver Terrace community.

Commissioner India Henderson and former Commissioner Kathy Henderson will lead a peace march with citizens, Police Chief Cathy Lanier, 5D Commander Jennifer Greene and the Guardian Angels to denounce the violence in this community. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, Mayor Adrian Fenty, U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Taylor, Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. and all At-Large Councilmembers and clergy are invited to participate in the peace march. Fourteen Carver Terrace youth were recruited for neighborhood patrols as a direct result of the first Carver Terrace/Guardian Angels community march on January 10, 2007.

Underscoring the peace march is a demand for the immediate installation of a surveillance camera for the 18th and M Streets area and heightened police patrols to restore law and order in the this community. The march will begin at the corner of 17th and M Streets, NE, at 7:00 p.m.; on January 17, 2007. An emergency community meeting will convene at the DC Developing Families Center, located at 801 17th Street, NE, prior to the march at 5:30 p.m.

“We are tired of the violence in our neighborhoods and we want the police to step up and do a better job of protecting this community, stated longtime resident S. Harris”.

A Little Comparison: Penn Ave Arts

I don't have time to do a point by point analysis right now, but take a look at this article on recreating a neighborhood through art. I've read about this area before (I really like their website, it's got a cool map similar to the Atlas District website [temporarily offline]) and it sounds cool. I've never been to Pittsburgh, but this makes me want to visit (just to see this area). They've done a great job of packaging the neighborhood for outsiders. I wonder a bit what it is like for people to read about the stuff on H Street if they've never been here.
There are many differences between H Street and Penn Avenue Arts, but there are also similarities worth noting. We're doing a bit more of an entertainment based revitalization, so we've got less art production (we also don't have a huge number of massive buildings), but maybe this won't always be so. They've got cheap real estate (it's Pittsburgh, ok?), while ours is probably overpriced (I submit as exhibit A the price tag sitting on the Sun & Moon building). Their neighborhood, notably, came close to being branded "The Zipper District," so we're not the only ones struggling with names for an area. Their planning seems far more comprehensive. They've got a cool sounding program to help artists secure cheap housing. Anyway, check it out.
Thanks to Rebuilding Place for the the Pop City Link. Check out what Richard has to say on the issue of arts based revitalization.

RP: Traffic & Parking In the City

Richard offers another post on one of his favorite topics. I'm waiting for him to come out with a quiz called "How Car Centric Are You?" Frankly, I agree with everything he writes here. I never would have moved to DC if it didn't have decent public transportation, and there is no doubt that cities simply weren't built (unless you mean brand new cities) with the idea that every resident would have a car. Any thoughts on Richard's post and the relevance of these issues for our area (aside from the rather obvious fact that a streetcar would help)?

Hangouts & Haunts (Updated)

This is a brand spanking new version of my list of hangouts and haunts (both current, and anticipated) in the area (H Street, and its surrounding neighborhoods to the north), but it doesn't include every restaurant. I've omitted most carry-outs since you can't technically "hangout" in them (unless you're talking shooting dice in Crown Chicken). This post is updated semi-regularly (so if it says opening "any day now" you should measure that from the time of the last update, not the date at the bottom of the post). At times this post may be slightly out of date, so please take that into account. Last partial update: 8/31/2011.

Guardian Angels Come to Carver Terrace

GOVERNMENT OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
Advisory Neighborhood Commission 5B, Single Member District 5B10

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Kathy Henderson
JANUARY 8, 2007 PHONE: (202) 397-2777

Northeast Community Finds New Allies in Fight Against Crime

(Washington DC) –Citizens in the Carver Terrace community, located in Ward 5 are waging an intense battle to permanently reclaim their neighborhood from criminals and senseless violence. A barrage of bullets disrupted neighborhood tranquility on January 7, 2007, leaving one victim shot and neighbors pensive but determined to reclaim the peace. This area also recently endured two quadruple shootings and three homicides.

Neighbors are worried about the recent resurgence of violence, yet are determined to restore peace and tranquility to this community. Commissioner India Henderson and former Commissioner Kathy Henderson have organized a community walk with citizens, police officials and the Guardian Angels to demonstrate solidarity against violence and crime. Newly elected Mayor Adrian Fenty and Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. are invited to lock arms with citizens in the walk for peace.

The Guardian Angels have worked with communities throughout the United States and abroad to help citizens take back their neighborhoods from criminals. The community walk will convene on January 10, 2007, at 6:30 p.m. at the corner of 19th Street and Maryland Avenue, NE.

“Every community has the right to be safe and we want to help citizens report crime and protect their homes” says John Ayala, spokesperson for the DC Chapter of the Guardian Angels. Citizens in the Carver Terrace community eagerly embraced their newest allies by voting unanimously at a recent community meeting to work with the Guardian Angels.

Phish Tea to Become Golf-Themed Tavern??

IMG_1388
A patron waits for her drink at Phish Tea.
This interesting little item appears on the 6A ABL agenda. It appears that Joe Englert has plans to purchase the massive Phish Tea building & transform it into some sort of golf-themed club. No word on what sort of food he'd likely serve there, but since he plans to seek a CT license he'd need to serve some food. This golf thing isn't knew. Rather, it has repeatedly popped up as a project Mr. Englert would like to take on. At one point there was word that he might plan to open a miniature golf course a bit further up Benning Road. This sounds like a more viable option.
The meeting will be at 7PM at Sherwood Recreation Center (10th & G) on Tuesday, January 16.

P1010129
The site of the proposed restaurant/tavern.
There will also be a representative speaking about the restaurant and tavern that Bernard "Cluck-U-Chicken" Gibson plans to open on the 2nd floor of a building on the corner of 12th & H.
