H Street on the Radar
More and more I see media coverage and other evidence of people interested in what's going on on H Street. This morning I received an email about an event organized by a group called Professionals in the City. On March 3rd the group will be hosting From the Circus to the Sea: H Street NE Nite Life Tour (consisting of visiting the Argonaut, the Red and the Black, H Street Martini Lounge, Palace of Wonders).
For anybody who wants to skip the Goldstar log in (it's worth it...they offer discounted tix to a lot of stuff) here's a link straight to the Pros in the city site about this event.

ReplyDeleteany news on when "The Pug" will open? Last I recall the target date was 2/1.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what the charge is for (and I think it said their group price was $7.50). I'm guessing that they usually charge for events. Can someone familiar with this group verify?
ReplyDeleteI think the Pug is very close, but I haven't heard an exact date.
ReplyDeleteI've never done a Pros in the city Guided tour, but I think the idea is that it's structured...somebody will probably lead the thing and probably spend some time coordinating with the bars.
ReplyDeleteYou can get it like half price through Goldstar events if you sign up for their stuff.
It may be that a person who lives in another area may see H St. as a complete unknown, even a slightly dangerous one, and may be happy to pay a few bucks to have someone lead them around, give them the lay of the land, and make them feel safer. I say that's great...hopefully they'll return and bring their friends.

ReplyDeleteI hope not. The last thing in the world I want is for the Argonaut to become overrun by a bunch of yuppies. I can deal with the hipsters in their corduroy sports jackets, but popped collars is where I draw the line.

Hill Rat - I don't think you will have to man the barricades against an invading horde of yuppies anytime soon. Even with all of the progress that has been made, you are still more likely to encounter a heroin addict than a "popped collar" on H street.

This makes me feel old. I was in high school the *first* time popped collars were in. We called them preppies.

You seem to be one of the tolerable few yuppies that has figured out how nice it is to have a nice neighborhood pub without ridiculous crowds where you can have a cocktail or 8 and a decent conversation.

ReplyDeleteFor those griping about a yuppie (which typically stands for "young urban professional", a category we all might very well fit in if we are moving into a progressive area of the city and writing on blogs) invasion, I would rather have foot traffic and H Street bars patronized than empty streets and H Street bars going out of business.

ReplyDeleteIn this case I'm using "yuppie" as short-hand for the numbskulls that think any place in DC where black and brown people live is a combat zone, and for the lemmings that believe nightlife in DC begins in Georgetown passes through Dupont Circle and ends in Adams Morgan.

On the radar? I'd say so! I was at the Red & Black on Tuesday night, and the place was hoppin' Every seat at the bar and all but one booth were occupied - with plenty of people going straight upstairs. Very mixed crowd w/ age, ethnicity, attire all over the map - so pretty representative of the area in general.

The people that "think any place in DC where black and brown people live is a combat zone" live and stay in Virginia. And the "lemmings that believe nightlife in DC begins in Georgetown passes through Dupont Circle and ends in Adams Morgan" don't venture much beyond those areas.

ReplyDeleteI'm well aware that many people who fit the traditional demographic profile of a "yuppie" don't have the kind of myopic world view that I associate with yuppie-dom. A quick look at your Blogger profile tells me that I probably hit pretty close to home for you and that may be the origin of your strenuous disagreement with my statements. If you're not the kind of dope who's poop-in-his-pants scared to be on H St unless he's on some sort of group junket into the wilds of NE (which I suspect you're not), then I wasn't talking about you.

My strenuous responses don't have to do with identification with any particular stereotypes you convey. I just don't understand how you are able to categorize a "dope who's poop-in-his-pants scared to be on H St unless he's on some sort of group junket into the wilds of NE" as a yuppie. The Truxton Circle, Bloomingdale, and Eckington areas of Northwest are saturated with what many identify as yuppies, yet the street crime there is some of the worst in the country. Hands down worse than H Street.

ReplyDeleteIt is Friday at 8 PM. Is the Pug open? If so, the first to confirm this, on Friday night only, gets a few drinks on me.
ReplyDeleteI stopped by around midnight (a few minutes past) and the door was locked, but the rolldown was up. The place looked nice. My money is on an opening either tomorrow night, or early next week (but I'm only guessing).
