If you've recently seen police escorts speeding down Florida Ave with semi trucks hauling huge black wrapped boxes you may have watched parts of these massive pre-fab homes on their way into town. Currently there are a couple of stacks over at the 12th & Florida site & more sitting in the big parking lot (the one belonging to Gallaudet that hosts a weekend flea market) at the Florida Market. Both sites are reportedly under 24 hour guard (we did see patrols). Tonight a massive crane arrived at the construction site. Apparently we should see at least some fully assembled buildings by Friday.

These pieces are the tops of the buildings and look like they are part of a walkout roof-top deck.

ReplyDeleteNo idea about the police escort, except that these things are huge. I didn't see the police escort, but some reliable neighbors of mine saw a couple of them.

ReplyDeleteAnd as for stealing an entire house, the foundations are already in the ground, but I personally have never seen anything like this.
It's cool but remember the floorplans? They were a bit unusual. Still, I'm glad to see something going in there.
ReplyDeleteThe whole project is odd. But I'm definitely interested in the assembly process for these things.
ReplyDeletePrefab homes have a bad reputation due similar to mobile homes, but it just looks like some parts are prefabricated. Also, prefabricated homes are much "greener" in that there is much less waste involved in their construction. Theres some really great modern prefab designs out there. Too bad there are no companies willing to actually have nice architecture or challenging designs.
ReplyDeleteThe concept behind these is really cool, I'm hoping they have an open house so I can check out the interiors and see how they stack up to stick built construction.
