JOHN KICRHNER: Unknowns
BRANDON MORSE: This Shape We're In

January 31 - March 21, 2009

images and info@: CLICK HERE

Conner Contemporary Art is pleased to present Unknowns, an exhibition of new work by John Kirchner and This Shape We're In, an exhibition of new video by Brandon Morse.

In Unknowns John Kirchner converses with unknown 19th century painters. Kirchner augments damaged vintage portraits, landscapes and history paintings with articles of clothing and other common objects. The artist's interventions with the works of his anonymous predecessors are thoughtful, critical and sometimes humorous. Kirchner, whose art furthers principles of the Arte Povera and Surrealist movements, has exhibited work at the Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh, PA, the Katonah Museum of Art, Katonah, NY, The Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, NY and the Anchorage Museum of Art, Anchorage, AL.

Brandon Morse examines factors of overreach, neglect and collapse with a series of video projections in This Shape We're In. Using digital media, the artist created images of architectonic structures. Morse's complex forms analogize cultural systems which strive to maintain their integrity as destructive external forces intensify. Seeming to toil as protagonists in universal struggles, the artist's vulnerable linear structures have the power to elicit our empathy, though they ultimately lack the strength to preserve their own constitutions. Morse has exhibited work at TorinOver '08, Torino, Italy, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, The San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, CA and the Mexican Cultural Institute, Washington, DC.

There will be an opening reception for the artists Saturday, January 31st from 6-8pm. Artists in attendance.

More on the Shooting

The City Paper reports further on the police involved shooting on 7th Street.

Police Shooting on 7th

Officers responded this morning to a call reporting an assault in progress. When they arrived a man attacked an officer with a knife and pole. At least one of the two officers opened fire. The man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Police entered the residence, which is a group home for mentally ill individuals, and discovered a stabbing victim. The shooting victim is the prime suspect in the stabbing. This occurred in the 800 block of 7th Street. No word yet on the condition of the stabbing victim, except that he, was being treated at a local hospital.

---------------------------------
UPDATE
---------------------------------
Apparently the earlier reports were wrong. The shooting victim died at the scene, and his body was only recently removed from the group house. Chief Lanier says officers fired one shot at the man.

Work @Micky's

The long boarded up Micky's building [yellow sign] has sold. I spotted a crew working on it yesterday just before 10am. They said the owner is renovating with the hopes of leasing it out. This building is located in the 1300 block of H, across from Sova.

The Hoya: Sidamo

IMG_4142
Georgetown's student paper has a nice review of Sidamo Coffee and Tea. But let me add to a couple of minor points. if you take the back way out of union station it really shouldn't take you more than five minutes to get to Sidamo, it is only a 10-15 minute walk if you ignore that trick. The author writes that Sidamo is-

Sandwiched between a boarded-up establishment and a liquor store

That boarded up establishment would be Pap and Petey's [currently closed for renovations], and the building on the other side of Sidamo used to be a liquor store, but it shut down quite a while ago and the owner is still trying to figure out what to do with the place. Otherwise it was a good piece.

Shuttle Info

Here's what they sent me-

H Street Northeast business leaders launched the new H Street Shuttle Wednesday, January 14th in front of the Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H Street, NE. Noting concern about transportation during the multi-year H Street “Great Streets” streetscape project, and the need for improved connections for H Street businesses, Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells worked with the DC Department of Transportation to identify funds to create a shuttle service for the corridor. The shuttle service will provide express services connecting the Gallery Place and Minnesota Avenue Metro Stations, with a limited number of stops on H Street, NE and run on an approximate 30 minute headway schedule.

The H Street Business Cooperative, a not-for-profit organization charged with addressing the transportation needs of the H Street Northeast businesses will oversee the new shuttle system which will be run by U Street Parking and Transportation, a DC company known for managing parking lots, valet services and transportation issues throughout Washington.

The Shuttle is free to all riders but is aimed at patrons from different areas of the city and the surrounding regions heading to H Street NE to enjoy the city’s newest arts, nightlife and retail destinations.

Riders should look for passenger vans with the Green and White H ST NE logo an all sides. The logo was created initially by Design Army, an award-winning graphic design firm located on H Street NE, for H Street Main Street (HSMS). In an effort to unify branding, generous cooperation with HSMS allows the placement of this dynamic logo on the shuttles. The initial design provided by HSMS, created through funding via the District’s Neighborhood Investment Fund, will be seen on banners along H Street NE promoting H Street business and the H Street Festival.

The Shuttle will run 7 evenings a week from 5 pm until the Metro closes; 12 am Sunday through Thursday and 3 am Friday and Saturday .

Initially, the east-bound shuttle stops will be:

· Gallery Place Metro (Red Line) 7th and H Street NW. Pick up in front of Zengo Restaurant, 781 7th Street NW on, 7th, just south of H Street NW.

· 5th and H Street NE

· 10th and H Street NE

· 1333 H Street NE (the Atlas Performing Arts Center)

· Starburst Intersection, 15th and H and Florida Ave NE (The Argonaut Tavern)

· Minnesota Avenue Metro (Blue and Orange Line)

And, west-bound stops at:

· Minnesota Avenue Metro (Blue and Orange Line)

· Starburst Intersection, 15th and H and Florida Ave NE (The Argonaut Tavern)

· Between 12th and 13th Streets on H Street NE

· 9th and H Street NE

· 5th and H Street NE

· Gallery Place Metro (Red Line) 7th and H Street NW. Drop off in front of Starbucks on H St NW.

Art of Change

Artomatic, Inc. and Playa del Fuego, Inc. – institutions of the mid-Atlantic arts community – have joined together to create this year's most distinctive inaugural celebration, The Art of Change (www.artists-ball.org), on Jan. 20, 2009 at 8 pm. With the generous support of Corporate Sponsor Scion (www.scion.com) and location sponsors The Warehouse Arts Complex (www.warehousetheater.com) and Douglas Development (www.douglasdevelopment.com), this event brings Washington, D.C., a unique opportunity to celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama as President. Tickets are available immediately for $50 at www.artists-ball.org

Occupying three separate venues on the 1000 block of 7th Street, NW in downtown Washington D.C., The Art of Change will feature visual and performing arts, multiple dance floors, fire dancing and live music. DJs from across the mid-Atlantic region will be spinning an eclectic mix of musical styles on two dance floors, and in The Art of Change Galleries, displaying artworks created for this celebration. The Variety Stage will showcase performances all night long, including live music, comedy, belly dancing and spoken word poetry. And outside, attendees will enjoy fire-dance performances while dancing to up-and-coming DJs in the heated White Tent.
...

In the spirit of community organizing and collaboration that President-elect Obama has come to represent, The Art of Change is being planned in collaboration with a number of supporting organizations. These include DC Burners, Dance Afire, Bethesda Theatre, Cultural Attaché, Washington Project for the Arts, 4&9 Productions LLC, Brightest Young Things, The Pink Line Project, Pecha Kucha , Creative DC, Hungry for Music, Capitol Riverfront BID, and NoMa BID.

This collaborative ethic also facilitates social engagement by making us all responsible for the creation and maintenance of our shared culture. We encourage all attendees to contribute by performing, displaying art, volunteering, or donating to make this event a success. For more information visit www.artists-ball.org.

From the comments-

I'm wondering if anyone has any H-St area service events for Monday (MLK Day/Obama's "Day of Service")?

H Street Shuttle Coming Soon

The following email went out on the 6A listserv-

Jen DeMayo announces in her H street Life column in the January issue of the Hillrag that a new H Street shuttle service starts this month. The express style shuttle will have an H Street Main street logo that will be easy to recognize. The free shuttle will run between the Gallery Place Metro stop (7th & H St. NW) to the Minnesota Ave Metro. It starts each evening at 5pm, and will run until the Metro closes. The shuttle will have a limited number stops to be determined during the first week of service. Everyone who lives, works or visits H St. NE is welcome to ride. There will be a soft opening in early January to work out the stps and schedule. Jen says that everyone is welcome to ride, and give feedback to make the service smooth and reliable.

Pretty cool. Now your friends can visit and not worry about catching a cab, or navigating the X2 timetable. No word yet on the frequence of the shuttle.
