Be Aware
So be careful, not fearful, but careful. And if you hear someone yelling for help, open the door/look out the window with cell phone in hand (then actually call the cops). Thankfully, people did that last night. Getting kicked in the head isn't a joke.

What's That Smell?
...or "Excuse me, your house stinks." A friend who lives over on Kent Pl. mentioned via email that the source of a certain localized stench had recently been identified. Apparently someone abandoned a large cache of meat that is believed to be circa July 4th. Gross, but I've got an equally foul tail to tell. This is the one I like to break out whenever someone else grumbles about that bushel of crab shells some moron abandoned on an empty lot (there is a special place in Hell for such people).
Way back in spring of 2002 I used to spend a great deal of time at a certain house located one block north of H Street and, I'll say, somewhere between 4th and 7th. Most of the houses on the western side of the street were owned and maintained by a single entity. But there was one house that was occupied by a woman and her early 20s son. That house had fallen into such disrepair that the upstairs back bathroom leaned badly, and other neighbors would frequently joke that the woman would one day find herself taking a bath in her backyard. We were cordial, but that was about it.
So no one was really sure what to do when a large stewpot filled with a thick white substance appeared on her back porch. At first it wasn't noticeable, but then the flies showed up...lots of them. As time passed and the heat increased the stench became unbearable. You couldn't even go into the backyard any more. We'd look at the stuff through the back door and watch as the heat dried it up a bit, only to have the next rain rehydrate the substance. Each time the flies returned with a renewed vigor. We couldn't stand it. I'm not sure how long it took, but I think it was around a month. One of us finally had to speak with the woman. Apparently, she had made chittlins and decided that her back porch would be an acceptable place to store the waste product. The stewpot disappeared, but I don't think the mental image of it is going anywhere.
DJ Nights @the Argonaut
Just a quick reminder that the Argonaut recently introduced dj nights upstairs on Fridays and Saturdays (9:30pm-1am). Here's what you can catch this weekend:
Friday night DJ Laurent Minassian spins deep, soulful, underground house music.
Saturday night DJ Ghost mixes up pop, hip hop, RnB, reggae, oldies but goodies, and reggaeton.
Metro's doing maintenance on every track this weekend, so you might as well stick with places you can walk to and from.
Last Chance for Dark Play or Stories for Boys
Here's how Forum's website describes the story:
Carlos Murillo's hit play explores the seductive power and nasty consequences of reinventing yourself online. Teenage loner Nick creates a dream girl to lure the idealistic and gullible Adam. But the game spirals out of control into a dark world of sex, lies, and violence in this provocative and sensual black comedy.

Dumpling/Ramen Bar is a Go
You've read the speculation on my part, but it is now confirmed. The second floor above the Pug will become a dumpling/ramen bar. I'm pretty excited. I love both dumplings, and ramen, but around here the options have mostly been Sticky Rice, or carry out. I love Sticky, but I also desire some diversity in my dumplings. So, like I said, I'm happy to hear of this development. Eric, formerly of Sticky Rice, is involved. Apparently the concept has caught on in NYC, and is now coming here.

BYT: The Pie Man Cometh
Dangerously Delicious Pies is taking over the white building.
Brightest Young Things reports that Baltimore's Dangerously Delicious Pies will open a location at 1339 H Street (Jumbo's old spot). Brightest Young Things reports that the H Street location will offer the same menu that is already available at the Federal Hill location. In 2008 Dangerously Delicious Pies was named Baltimore's Best Pie by the Baltimore City Paper. Sweet! For those who lack a sweet tooth, Dangerously Delicious also does savory pies.
Taylored Design
That isn't an accidental mispelling. Dwell and Apartment Therapy have recently both written about the design elements of local deli Taylor Gourmet (1116 H Street NE) and the living spaces located above.

Streetcar Update
On Thursday, August 6 at 7:00 pm at the Atlas Performing Arts Center (1333 H Street NE), Advisory Neighborhood Commissions 5B, 6A and 6C will co-host a public meeting with Gabe Klein, Director of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), to receive an update on the H Street-Benning Road streetcar line. The ANCs requested this meeting to try to improve the dialog between the community and DDOT about the streetcar project. It will also be a great opportunity for us to ask Gabe questions about how DDOT plans to overcome potential obstacles to making this streetcar line a reality. The ANCs requested this meeting months ago after the H Street-Benning Road Streetcar Alliance met and decided this would be an important step forward. Meeting information is also available online: http://streetcars4d

RP: Age Groups and Nightlife on H Street
Is this man too old for the Pug? Probably not.
Richard of Rebuilding Place writes about differing age groups and how we need to consider them when determining neighborhood uses. It seems he too has been thinking about the recent Post article in which condo owners lament the noisy nightlife on U Street. The article reminded me of the perennial cries that "[t]here's no parking." The degree to which people sympathize, or don't sympathize with such complaints varies widely. Personally, I think H Street has probably gotten safer since more night oriented stuff opened simply because you can now often find groups of people standing outside at night. The counterpoint to that argument is that more people might be at risk of crime at night on H Street because they are now more likely to be there while intoxicated.
I had a related conversation last night when a younger co-worker (very early 20s) mentioned that she and some friends had recently gone barhopping on H Street and felt out of place because they were so young. I said I suspected that the Country Club probably currently has the youngest average crowd. Depending on the show, The Rock and Roll Hotel and the Red and the Black can also skew younger. Rose's Dream is mostly an older crowd, and I think that is generally also true of the Martini Lounge (to a much lesser degree). "How old"are the hangouts around here?

On July 25, 2009, at approximately 0100hrs, officers on patrol in the area of 1800 M Street, NE were responding for a fight when they heard several gunshots, located an adult male suffering from several gunshot wounds and saw several subjects fleeing from the scene on foot toward 18th Place, NE.

DPW: Free Mural
Via the listserv:
Good morning residents,
The DC Department of Public Works and Councilmember Jim Graham have launched the second year of the MuralsDC program, created to replace illegal graffiti with artistic works, to help revitalize communities and teach young people the art of aerosol painting. This initiative positively engages DC youth and has been successful in deterring future acts of graffiti vandalism on the property.
District citizens may have their residential (or commercial property) considered as a potential mural site if they are privately owned and highly visible from the street. Residents also must be willing to sign an agreement form authorizing use of this space for the mural (which will be approximately 10 x 20 feet).
For more information, please contact Nancee Lyons at (202) 671-2637 or send an email to receive an application and release form.
Thank you!
